New OSU Medical Center board taking shape
As part of its institution-wide alignment initiative, Ohio State has created a new governance structure for its Medical Center and formed a new board to guide and oversee its health system. Creation of the new board, comprised of 22 members — 13 with voting privileges — was approved earlier this year by Ohio State's Board of Trustees. Jeffrey Wadsworth, president and chief executive officer of Battelle, will chair the board.
The new Medical Center board enhances strategic alignment between the Medical Center’s five individual hospital boards and reports to the university's Board of Trustees through its medical affairs committee.

Gregoire to serve as Interim Dean of College of Social Work
Ohio State's College of Social Work has appointed Tom Gregoire to serve as interim dean, effective Tuesday (9/1). Gregoire served for six years as the college’s associate dean and is beginning his 14th year at Ohio State. He earned his PhD in social work from the University of Kansas in 1994. An associate professor, Gregoire’s research interests include access to substance abuse treatment and treatment among vulnerable populations. FATTY ACIDS AS COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY (FACT) STUDY. Men and post-menopausal women who have diabetes may be eligible to participate in a 36-week study to understand the role of dietary oils in combination with medicine to control body weight and blood sugar. Participants will receive dietary oil supplements throughout the study, which includes nine visits to the Davis Medical Research Center at OSU, diet and activity assessments, collection of blood and tissue samples, and body measurements. Voice mail users may need to re-record mailbox greetings due to a Sept. 16 system issue
The central voice mail system that serves the Columbus, Mansfield, Marion, Newark and Wooster campuses experienced a partial system malfunction on Tuesday (9/16). As a result, the mailbox greetings and names for some voice mail users were erased and may need to be re-recorded. Kirwan Institute call for proposals: Transforming Race Conference
The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity has announced a Call for Proposals for its second biannual conference, Transforming Race: Crisis and Opportunity in the Age of Obama, to be held March 11-13, 2010, in Columbus. Proposals are due Thursday (10/15), and should address any of three thematic tracks: Racial Dynamics and Systems Thinking; Race Talk; and Race, Recession, and Recovery. Conference planners invite practitioners, community organizers, scholars, researchers, and others to submit proposals for papers, entire panels, workshops, performances, and more. Read more:

Sept. 23: Federal budget expert to discuss federal R&D priorities
Kei Koizumi, a leading authority on the federal budget, federal support for research and development, science policy issues, and R&D funding will be on campus to deliver “Federal Science Research and Development Priorities for 2010 and Beyond,” at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday (9/23) in 1080 Physics Research Building. Koizumi currently serves as assistant director for federal R&D in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The talk will also be webcast in 115 Biomedical Research Tower. Journal of Undergrad Research looking for submissions, reviewers
JUROS, the Journal of Undergraduate Research at OSU, is looking for undergraduate research papers as well as undergraduate student reviewers. There is no submission fee, authors retain all rights to their works and faculty/grad students are allowed to be co-authors on undergrad papers. Two undergraduate reviewers edit papers and, once all edits are made, the paper is published both online and in a hard-copy edition, Oculus. Students from all disciplines welcome to apply. Learn the art of relaxation with Qigong (chee-gong) — a method of relaxation and stress management through gentle movement. Sept. 25: Update in Hospital Medicine 2009 conference
Update in Hospital Medicine 2009, a CME conference is scheduled to take place on Friday (9/25) at the University Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, 3110 Olentangy River Road. The symposium consists of six live presentations, Q and A discussion time and will cover a wide array of critical care and hospital medicine topics. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.; the program will conclude at 3 p.m. Registration is $50 for physicians, $25 for non-physicians.
