Ohio State Trustees affirm $1 billion ProjectONE Medical Center plan
Architecture and construction plans for ProjectONE, an expansion project for Ohio State that will significantly advance the Medical Center’s education and research programs and improve patient care, were approved on Friday (9/18) by the university's Board of Trustees. This is one of the largest job-generating initiatives in Ohio’s history. It is projected to create as many as 10,000 new full-time jobs and more than 5,000 construction jobs. ProjectONE will provide the community with $1.7 billion in annual economic impact by 2015, which is in addition to the more than $4 billion in economic impact generated annually by the university. Ohio State names Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in honor of $7 million gift
Ohio State's Board of Trustees on Friday (9/18) approved the naming of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in recognition of a $7 million gift from the Elizabeth Ireland Graves Foundation to support the renovation of Sullivant Hall, an historic building located at a main gateway to the university’s campus. The project is estimated to cost $20.6 million and will be completed in 2013, at which time Sullivant Hall will house both the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum and Ohio State's Department of Dance. FATTY ACIDS AS COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY (FACT) STUDY. Men and post-menopausal women who have diabetes may be eligible to participate in a 36-week study to understand the role of dietary oils in combination with medicine to control body weight and blood sugar. National Science Board to meet at Ohio State Sept. 24
The federal panel charged with advising the President and Congress on national policy issues relating to science and engineering research and education will be meeting at Ohio State this week. The National Science Board responded to an invitation from Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee. While many of the NSB’s sessions are closed, a public meeting will be held from 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday (9/24) at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, which will include a discussion of NSB priorities for the next fiscal year and reports from the NSB chairman and committees. Call for nominations for university-wide awards
Academic Affairs is seeking nominations for the university-wide faculty and staff awards. Awards include Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching; Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Award; Distinguished Scholar Award; Distinguished Staff Award; Distinguished University Professor; Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service; University Distinguished Lecture; Distinguished Service Award; and Battelle Endowment grants. Today: Foreign Language Center hosts Langfest 2009
Faculty and staff are asked to help inform incoming freshman and current students that they are invited to Langfest 2009, from noon-3 p.m. today (9/21) in Hagerty Hall. The event is sponsored by the Foreign Language Center, and features the OSU language departments and Title VI Centers. Senate approves 2012-2013 semester calendar
At its Thursday (6/11) meeting, the University Senate approved the 2012-2013 academic calendar of two semesters, a May term, and a summer session, as proposed by the Council on Enrollment and Student Progress. The proposal was originally scheduled for a vote on Thursday (5/28), but the Senate at that time asked CESP to further review the calendar and conduct more community forums before a final vote. The proposed calendar was amended twice during debate at the June meeting: the first amendment moved Spring Break to March 11-15, 2013, and the second amendment extended the May Term from three to four weeks. Renovated Thompson Library opens Aug. 3
The William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library opened its doors to the public Monday (8/3) after a three-year renovation. The library features a second entrance on the Neil Avenue (west) side of the building, spaces for individual and group study, a restored Grand Reading Room, a massive, glass enclosed new study room facing west campus, the ground-level Berry Cafe and the Campus Reading Room on the 11th floor of the Stacks Tower. Ohio State climbs in latest U.S. News rankings
Ohio State has climbed in the rankings of the nation’s best public and private universities according to U.S. News & World Report. The publication’s 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges released Thursday (8/20) ranked Ohio State as 18th among all public universities and 53rd among all 262 national institutions rated. The rankings show steady improvement over the last five years. Ohio State has climbed from 62nd among all universities (public and private) in 2004 and 22nd among publics. Overseas trip, award help affirm India as strong partner for OSU
The President’s and Provost’s Council on Strategic Internationalization presented a set of specific strategies in June to enhance Ohio State’s already-substantial presence around the world, and President E. Gordon Gee wasted little time implementing the strategy. In late August, he returned from a 12-day trip to India, one of the countries in which the council advised an increased focus. Read more:

During the trip, Ohio State professor Rattan Lal received the prestigious international M.S. Swaminathan Award from the Trust for the Advancement of Agricultural Sciences in New Delhi, India. The award recognizes those who have made great impacts in the field of agriculture on a global basis, and in food security and sustainability of agriculture in India. Read more >
Master plan will set stage for true One University
University leaders here have begun a comprehensive master plan they’re calling One Ohio State Framework - a reference to President Gee’s call for “One University.” The plan will allow the university to establish a long-range physical vision for the campus and provide a context for smarter decisions about how we spend, build and grow - both now and in the future, said Jeff Kaplan, senior vice president for administration and planning and special assistant to the president. Ohio State taps new leader for strategic enrollment planning
Ohio State has tapped M. Dolan Evanovich as vice president for strategic enrollment planning. In the position, he will be responsible for attracting and retaining the highest quality student body. Evanovich fills an expanded role created by the retirement later this year of Martha Garland, who has served as vice provost for enrollment services and dean for undergraduate education.

OSU graduate chosen to lead College of Veterinary Medicine
Lonnie King, a national leader in veterinary medicine, has been named dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. King previously served as a director of the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne and Enteric Diseases. His appointment was effective Tuesday (9/1). At the CDC, King led activities for surveillance, diagnostics, disease investigations, epidemiology, research, public education, policy development and disease prevention and control programs. Ohio State chemist wins presidential award
John M. Herbert is among 100 scientists and engineers honored with the 2009 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest award that a beginning researcher can receive in the United States. Herbert was recognized for his work in developing novel algorithms for the simulation of electronically-excited states consisting of hundreds of atoms and for applying these techniques to the characterization of photochemical processes in DNA.
