Whitacre receives national recognition
Caroline Whitacre, vice president for research at Ohio State, was recently inducted into the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 2009 Volunteer Hall of Fame for Researchers. Whitacre, also a professor of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics in the College of Medicine, was one of three researchers selected for this national honor in recognition of her outstanding volunteer support, for making a difference in the community and for advancing awareness of the Society’s mission to create a world free of multiple sclerosis. Whitacre has been on the forefront of multiple sclerosis research for more than 30 years.

Mansoor, Bonenberger receive 2009 Ohioana Awards
The Ohioana Library Association recently announced the 15 recipients of the 2009 Ohioana Awards, presented annually for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, juvenile books, and books about Ohio or Ohioans. Peter Mansoor, the General Raymond Mason Chair of Military History at Ohio State and Colonel, U.S. Army (retired), won the nonfiction category with Baghdad at Sunrise: A Brigade Commander’s War in Iraq. Ohio State Alumni Magazine editor Lynne Bonenberger received the Ohioana James P. Barry Award for Editorial Excellence. The awards will be presented Saturday (10/17) in the Statehouse Atrium on Capitol Square.

2010 Junior Seminar call for proposals
Tenure-track faculty from all academic units are invited to propose a Junior Seminar for spring or summer 2010. Applications sought for 2010 Staff Career Development Grants
The application deadline is Monday (10/26) for Staff Career Development Grants of up to $500 each, which can be used toward expenses such as conference fees, registration fees, tuition, textbooks, research supplies, and transportation costs — for activities that occur during calendar year 2010. Graduate student research funds available
The Graduate School’s Alumni Grants for Graduate Research and Scholarship Program provides up to $2,000 to support the research and scholarship of doctoral or MFA candidates in a terminal degree program for their dissertations or theses. Sept. 24: Intro to robotic surgery
Ohio State’s Center for Advanced Robotic Surgery will host “An Introduction to Robotic Surgery for Urologic and Gynecologic Cancers” from 5-6 p.m. Thursday (9/24) in the Ross Heart Hospital Auditorium in observance of Prostate and Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. Ronney Abaza, co-director of the Center for Advanced Robotic Surgery and director of robotic urologic surgery at The James, and David O’Malley, a gynecologic oncologist at The James will be presenting. James Cancer Hospital to host discussion on clinical trials
James P. Thomas, medical director of clinical trials at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Sept. 23: Federal budget expert to discuss federal R&D priorities
Kei Koizumi, a leading authority on the federal budget, federal support for research and development, science policy issues, and R&D funding will be on campus to deliver “Federal Science Research and Development Priorities for 2010 and Beyond,” at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday (9/23) in 1080 Physics Research Building. Koizumi currently serves as assistant director for federal R&D in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The talk will also be webcast in 115 Biomedical Research Tower.
