NCI grant to boost leukemia research At Ohio State
The National Cancer Institute has awarded the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute a five-year, $11.5 million Specialized Program of Research Excellence grant to study and treat leukemia. The SPORE grant represents a milestone for the leukemia program at OSUCCC-James, which is only the second recipient of such an NCI grant directed at leukemia research. Read more >

OSU's Buckeye Bullet 2 exceeds speed record
Ohio State’s Buckeye Bullet 2 team on Wednesday (9/23) eclipsed its own international speed record set in 2007. The Bullet’s 299.91 mph speed, pending certification before it can be called an official record, far surpasses the certified record of 132.129 mph set by the Buckeye Bullet 2 in 2007. The hydrogen fuel cell powered landspeed streamliner racer and its engineering student team are making the record attempts in the Salt Flats in Utah this week. Today: Take a Lap Around the Oval with university leadership
Put on your walking shoes and take a lap with university leaders today at noon. “Take a Lap Around the Oval” is the official kickoff for Your Plan for Health’s 2009 Hit the Road with the Buckeyes challenge, so wear your HTR T-shirts and pedometers. Free food samples and bottled water, health/wellness vendors with giveaways and raffle prize drawings. ODOT's online SR 315 Halftime Report contains helpful info
The Ohio Department of Transportation has completed the first phase of a two year construction project to improve State Route 315 from I-670 to Ackerman Road. The work impacted campus area traffic this summer. ODOT has posted a SR 315 Halftime Report on its web site that contains details pertaining to the current status of the project and includes an interesting Q and A (see page 13).
ORRP assistance available for student researchers
The Office of Responsible Research Practices offers special office hours autumn quarter in 215 Physical Activities and Education Services building to help graduate and undergraduate student researchers preparing Behavioral and Social Sciences Institutional Review Board submissions and exemption requests. Staff will help students and their advisors navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. No appointment is necessary. National Parks series premieres Sept. 27 on WOSU TV
WOSU TV will premiere The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns, at 8 p.m. Sunday (9/27). Filmed at some of nature's most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska — the series is a story of people from every conceivable background. Professor Ben Rich, Alumni Association Endowed Chair of Bioethics in the School of Medicine at the University of California at Davis, will present “Palliative Care Education and the Culpability of Cultivated Ignorance” at the 10th Annual Marialuisa Ferrari Lectureship for Life on Monday (9/28) at the Biomedical Research Tower Auditorium.
