Math used as a tool to heal toughest of wounds

Scientists expect a new mathematical model of chronic wound healing could replace intuition with clear guidance on how to test treatment strategies in tackling a major public-health problem. The Ohio State researchers are the first to publish a mathematical model of an ischemic wound – a common complication of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and other conditions that can be characterized by poor vascular health. An estimated 6.5 million people in the United States are affected by chronic wounds. Read more: http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/woundmodel.htm

New flu web site offers answers to frequently asked questions

In preparation for a potential H1N1 pandemic, the university has created a web site to keep students, faculty and staff informed about flu prevention and treatment. Q&A like this one can be found at http://flu.osu.edu.
Q. Why isn’t the university testing and tracking cases of H1N1?
A. We now know that the H1N1 virus is moderate in its severity, making it very similar to the seasonal flu. Because of this, the Centers for Disease Control has recommended that the treatment for both types of flu be the same. A confirmation of H1N1 would not change the recommended course. Faculty, students and staff who do become ill are asked to remain home and limit contact with others. Medical attention should be sought for a fever of 103 degrees or greater.
