Headline newsFELINE VIRUS, ANTIVIRAL DRUG STUDIED TO UNDERSTAND DRUG RESISTANCEResearchers at Ohio State will spend the next two years testing their theories
about just how an AIDS-like virus in cats is able to resist the powerful medicines
that are thrown against it. It's one of the latest efforts at understanding
one of the leading problem areas in medicine today - antimicrobial drug resistance.
When bacteria or viruses become resistant to drugs, they become more difficult,
or even impossible, to treat. If successful, the research might pave the way
to smarter, more effective treatments for a host of pathogens that have learned
to resist most therapeutic efforts. Lawrence Mathes, OSU professor of veterinary
biosciences and associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College
of Veterinary Medicine, is the principal investigator on the project. Read

OSU CYBERSECURITY DAY FEATURES STATE OF OHIO SPEAKERSThe Office of the Chief Information Officer marks Cybersecurity month on Tuesday
(10/16) with presentations scheduled throughout the day in 202 Pfahl Hall.
Two morning sessions focus on the university's security policy and standards.
The afternoon sessions spotlight identity theft and privacy issues with guest
speakers Sol Bermann, privacy officer for the State of Ohio and Matthew Hellman,

Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan,
is the next OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series guest on Thursday (10/18)
in 311 Denney Hall. A forum/question and answer will begin at 4 p.m. with a
public reading set for 7 p.m. Her poems have appeared in The Best American
Poetry, Atlantic Monthly and The Yale Review, and other publications. The event

in the United States” from 10-11 a.m. Friday (10/19) in the Prior Library’s
fifth floor Medical Heritage Center. The speaker, Jim Curran, currently the
dean of the Emory Rollins School of Public Health, was with the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention when the AIDS epidemic first emerged. Light

spirit. The events begin on Sunday (10/14) with the Stefanie Spielman Homecoming
5K, which begins at 9 a.m. at Beekman Park, corner of Kenny and Lane. Proceeds
benefit The James Cancer Hospital. The annual Homecoming Parade is at 6 p.m.

initiatives: The Dissertation Research Awards and 21st Century Contexts Grants.
Two Dissertation Research Awards of up to $2,500 are available for graduate
students with an approved dissertation prospectus, to support research about
the teaching of writing or the study of writing. The deadline is Thursday (11/1).
The 21st Century Contexts Grants - intended to encourage the study of writing
and composition - award eight $3,000-$5,000 grants per year to faculty, staff
