Headline newsMESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GEEDear Ohio State Faculty and Staff: By now you have heard about an important community fundraising effort - the 2007 Bucks for Charity Drive - a campaign that has been running since Monday (10/1) and will continue through Friday (12/7) on the Columbus Campus. The Bucks for Charity Drive provides the Ohio State community with an opportunity to support more than 300 not-for-profit organizations. All of the agencies work to provide vital programs and services within their local communities to those that need them most. Please remember that any gift will make a real difference. ENDEAVOR CENTER IS NATIONAL RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AWARD WINNERCollaboration and commitment to boost economic development of rural southern
Ohio have placed Ohio State's Endeavor Center on a national pedestal of success.
The business incubator, located at Ohio State's South Centers at Piketon in
Pike County, has been named the 2007 Economic Development Administration National
Rural Economic Development Award winner. Nominations are evaluated based on
how effectively market-based strategies are utilized to improve rural economic
development. The award was presented during a brief presentation on Thursday
(10/11) on the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences campus. Read

SECURITY TIP FROM THE CIO: MINIMUM COMPUTER SECURITY STANDARDThe university's new Minimum Computer Security Standard applies to all members
of the Ohio State community. Use the 3 P's to ensure you're meeting the requirements:
Password (use a password on all your computers, preferably a good password),
Patch (keep security patches up to date), Protect (run protective software
like anti-virus, anti-spyware and a local firewall). Get details on all these

Faculty Research Grants. Grants up to $5,000 may be awarded in two categories:
Interdisciplinary Lectures, Seminars and Conferences; and International Research
Travel. International Affairs awards grants to fund research activities that
support international themes and which contribute to the mission of the Area
Studies Centers. Ohio State faculty, interdisciplinary areas and academic units
are eligible to apply. The deadline for submissions is Friday (11/16). A

kicks off the lecture series, “20-20 Vision: The Future of Scholarship
and Publishing,” at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/24) in the Faculty Club Grand
Lounge. Refreshments begin at 3:15 p.m. Explore issues of scholarship and publishing

Office of Responsible Research Practices is offering help sessions for faculty

preparation and submission of proposals to the NIH. The product provides significant
auto-filling of forms, extensive error checking, and the ability to see the
entire proposal as it will look to reviewers before submission - for both PC
and Mac users. Register online OSU CYBERSECURITY DAY FEATURES STATE OF OHIO SPEAKERSThe Office of the Chief Information Officer marks Cybersecurity month on Tuesday (10/16) with presentations scheduled throughout the day in 202 Pfahl Hall. Two morning sessions focus on the university's security policy and standards. The afternoon sessions spotlight identity theft and privacy issues with guest speakers Sol Bermann, privacy officer for the State of Ohio and Matthew Hellman, from the Ohio Attorney General's Office. The event is free and open to all. Read more > COLLEGE PLANNING SESSION OCT. 16The office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience will be offering a college planning session on Tuesday (10/16) in 172 Newton Hall for faculty and staff with children in grades 7-10. Bring a lunch to the brown bag session. The one-hour session will help parents understand open and competitive admissions processes, how high school courses affect a child's chances of being admitted to college, and strategies for paying for college.
