SOFTWARE A BOOST FOR SCIENTISTS OPERATING RESEARCH TOOLS OVER THE INTERNET

Software under development at Ohio State is helping scientists operate big-budget research instruments - such as high-powered microscopes and telescopes - over the Internet, more safely and efficiently than was possible before. The need for such remote operation is growing, and it’s driven by the costs of doing research, explained Prasad Calyam, a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering at Ohio State. Calyam is a senior systems developer at the Ohio Supercomputer Center, where he and other researchers are developing the software in collaboration with materials scientists at Ohio State's Center for the Accelerated Maturation of Materials. EMINENT ENGINEER WILL SPEAK ON COGNITIVE MEMORY

Computer Science and Engineering is hosting a Distinguished Lecture on Cognitive Memory and Its Applications, presented by Bernard Widrow, professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (10/18) in 260 Dreese Labs. Together with M.E. Hoff, Jr., his first doctoral student at Stanford, he invented the LMS algorithm in 1959. Widrow has received numerous honors from IEEE as well as the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Engineering from the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia. Read more >

Interested in your bone health? Medical research volunteers are sought for “MicroMRI” study. We are looking for women who are at least five years postmenopausal, are not taking hormones or bone density therapy, and who have had a fracture or match a participant who has. Participants will have a bone density test and a wrist MRI every six months for three years. Bone density results will be shared with participants and their physicians. CONCERT TONIGHT TO HONOR COMPOSER PAULUS; PREMIERE NEW WORK

Composer Stephen Paulus will be in attendance at a School of Music concert honoring his work at 8 p.m. today (10/16) in Weigel Auditorium. The Guest Artist Series concert includes the world premiere of Petite Suite, written by Paulus for the COSMOS trio, comprised of Katherine Borst Jones, OSU professor of music, on flute; Jeanne Norton OSU School of Music lecturer, on harp; and Mary Harris, Miami University faculty member, on viola. TELR ACCEPTING GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR INNOVATIONS IN eLEARNING

TELR is accepting applications for a new initiative to promote eLearning experimentation at Ohio State. The Expertise Grant program enables faculty to collaborate with TELR eLearning consultants to develop and test their ideas for teaching and learning with technology. Faculty may request from 20 to 100 hours of TELR staff support, as well as up to $10,000 in funding, to support instructional innovation. Up to two projects, twice per year, can be supported. Are you interested in asking and answering scholarly questions about your teaching? FTAD and The Ohio State University Association for the Scholarship of Teaching (TOAST) invite you to attend the workshop “Tools for Educational Research: Design and Methodology for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning” from 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday (10/17) in 300 Younkin Success Center. ADAM UNSWORTH ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM OCT. 18 IN WEIGEL

The OSU School of Music is welcoming the Adam Unsworth Ensemble for a Guest Artist Series Concert at 8 p.m. Thursday (10/18) in Weigel Auditorium. The Philadelphia-based group will perform selections from Unsworth’s CD, Excerpt This!, as well as more original music and jazz standards. The ensemble includes Adam Unsworth, associate professor of horn at the University of Michigan, on horn; Les Thimmig, woodwinds; Tony Miceli, vibraphone; Brian Howell, bass; and Erik Johnson, drums. The Digital Union is continuing its series of Tech Tuesday workshops, held from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday during fall quarter. STAFF CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANT APPLICATIONS SOUGHT

Human Resources is accepting applications for 2008 Staff Career Development Grants. The grants are worth up to $500 each and are awarded annually to offset education and training costs needed to further staff career goals and professional development. You must be a regular full-time or part-time staff member and have at least two years of continuous employment with Ohio State. Applications are due Monday (10/29) and are available online . HOMECOMING PARADE TO IMPACT TRAFFIC OCT. 19

The 2007 OSU Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally is scheduled for approximately 6-7:30 p.m. Friday (10/19) and the following streets will be closed during the parade: Woody Hayes/Woodruff bet. Cannon and High; Tuttle Park Place bet. Woodruff and 17th; 17th bet. Tuttle and College; College bet. Woodruff and 12th; 12th bet. High and Neil; and High bet. Lane and 11th. The parade will begin in the southeast Stadium lot and will end on the south side of the French Field House. The pep rally will be held inside FFH. View a map of the parade route. WELLNESS PROGRAM LUNCH & LEARN PROGRAMS SCHEDULED

The Faculty and Staff Wellness Program offers a number of workshops each quarter on unique topics to help you be well and stay healthy. Upcoming autumn quarter classes include: “Understanding Food Labels,” noon-1 p.m. Wednesday (10/31), McCampbell Hall; and “Take Charge! HELP BUCKEYES DEFEAT WOLVERINES IN CHALLENGE FOR LIFE

The OSU Chapter of Students for Organ Donation has accepted a challenge from the University of Michigan to see which university can register the most organ and tissue donors before noon on Friday (11/16). To join the Challenge for Life, register online. The registrant will be connected to a secure Web site maintained by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles to register a new commitment or confirm a prior decision to be a donor.
