Headline newsSOFTWARE A BOOST FOR SCIENTISTS OPERATING RESEARCH TOOLS OVER THE INTERNETSoftware under development at Ohio State is helping scientists operate big-budget
research instruments - such as high-powered microscopes and telescopes - over
the Internet, more safely and efficiently than was possible before. The need
for such remote operation is growing, and it’s driven by the costs of
doing research, explained Prasad Calyam, a doctoral student in electrical and
computer engineering at Ohio State. Calyam is a senior systems developer at
the Ohio Supercomputer Center, where he and other researchers are developing
the software in collaboration with materials scientists at Ohio State's Center
for the Accelerated Maturation of Materials. Read more >
EMINENT ENGINEER WILL SPEAK ON COGNITIVE MEMORYComputer Science and Engineering is hosting a Distinguished Lecture on Cognitive
Memory and Its Applications, presented by Bernard Widrow, professor of Electrical
Engineering at Stanford University, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (10/18) in 260 Dreese
Labs. Together with M.E. Hoff, Jr., his first doctoral student at Stanford,
he invented the LMS algorithm in 1959. Widrow has received numerous honors
from IEEE as well as the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Engineering from the Franklin

CONCERT TONIGHT TO HONOR COMPOSER PAULUS; PREMIERE NEW WORKComposer Stephen Paulus will be in attendance at a School of Music concert
honoring his work at 8 p.m. today (10/16) in Weigel Auditorium. The Guest Artist
Series concert includes the world premiere of Petite Suite, written by Paulus
for the COSMOS trio, comprised of Katherine Borst Jones, OSU professor of music,
on flute; Jeanne Norton OSU School of Music lecturer, on harp; and Mary Harris,
Miami University faculty member, on viola. Tickets are available at the door.
Contact: 292-0789 TELR ACCEPTING GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR INNOVATIONS IN eLEARNINGTELR is accepting applications for a new initiative to promote eLearning experimentation
at Ohio State. The Expertise Grant program enables faculty to collaborate with
TELR eLearning consultants to develop and test their ideas for teaching and
learning with technology. Faculty may request from 20 to 100 hours of TELR
staff support, as well as up to $10,000 in funding, to support instructional
innovation. Up to two projects, twice per year, can be supported. The application

are common. STAFF CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANT APPLICATIONS SOUGHTHuman Resources is accepting applications for 2008 Staff Career Development
Grants. The grants are worth up to $500 each and are awarded annually to
offset education and training costs needed to further staff career goals and
professional development. You must be a regular full-time or part-time staff
member and have at least two years of continuous employment with Ohio State.
Applications are due Monday (10/29) and are available
online .
The grants are funded through contributions to the Campus Campaign's Staff

6-7:30 p.m. Friday (10/19) and the following streets will be closed during
the parade: Woody Hayes/Woodruff bet. Cannon and High; Tuttle Park Place bet.
Woodruff and 17th; 17th bet. Tuttle and College; College bet. Woodruff and
12th; 12th bet. High and Neil; and High bet. Lane and 11th. The parade will
begin in the southeast Stadium lot and will end on the south side of the French
Field House. The pep rally will be held inside FFH. View a map of the parade
