Each session will occur from 1:30-3 p.m. in 120 Baker Systems Engineering. No registration is required, and all faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. OHIO STATE RETAINS RANK AS NATION'S LARGEST CAMPUS

Ohio State is again the nation's largest university with 52,568 undergraduate, graduate and professional students enrolled on the Columbus campus - 750 students higher than last autumn quarter. When adding enrollment at its five regional campuses, the total is more than 60,000. The increase in enrollment is attributed to several sources - record first-year student retention and increases in transfer students (1,513). As the academic profile of Ohio State continues to improve, so does retention. In 1994, 78 percent of freshmen continued on to their sophomore year. This year, retention is projected at a record 92.4 percent for students who enrolled a year ago. Read more >

FOREIGN & SECOND LANGUAGE EDUCATION PROGRAM AWARDED $1.5 MILLION GRANT

The Foreign & Second Language Education Program in the College of Education and Human Ecology has been awarded a five-year, $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition to implement a professional training program for in-service English-as-a-second-language (ESL) and secondary content teachers throughout Ohio, and to conduct research on collaborative teacher education and teachers’ experiences with combining academic content and English language learning. FISHER TO HONOR FIVE DISTINGUISHED ALUMS, ALUTTO OCT. 19

Five outstanding Fisher College of Business alums whose hard work has made a difference in the corporate world and the community will be honored at the annual 2007 Dean’s Dinner and Alumni Awards Presentation, to be held at 6 p.m. Friday (10/19) at the Blackwell Inn on the Fisher campus. Joseph Alutto, OSU executive vice president and provost, will also be acknowledged during the banquet for his contributions to Fisher College. A list of honorees and short bios is available online. CAMPUS RECOGNIZED FOR FIRE SAFETY PROGRAM

Gov. Ted Strickland recognized the Ohio State/Columbus Fire Department fire prevention program on Friday (10/12) as the premier Ohio college/university fire prevention program. Delta Theta Sigma fraternity members teamed up with the Columbus Fire Department and OSU Department of Public Safety Emergency Management and Fire Prevention to conduct fire safety programs on campus during September, recognized as Campus Fire Prevention Month. Public Safety wants to encourage the campus community to practice fire prevention skills throughout the year and to get involved in fire safety training. DIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES KICKS OFF TODAY

The President and Provost’s Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts Series kicks off the 2007-08 season at 4 p.m. today (10/17) with Allan G. Johnson, writer, teacher, and public speaker, presenting “Unraveling the Knot of Privilege, Power and Difference” in the Ag. Administration Building Auditorium. A reception and book signing will follow. Johnson has authored two books, “The Gender Knot” (revised edition, 2005) and “Privilege, Power, and Difference.” Diversity series events are free and open to the public. The John Glenn School of Public Affairs recently won the bid to host the 10th biennial conference of the Public Management Research Association, to be held Wednesday (10/1/08)-Friday (10/3/08) at the Hyatt on Capitol Square. The Public Management Research Conference is the foremost gathering of public management research scholars from across the United States. UNITED NATIONS CORRESPONDENT FOR NEW YORK TIMES TO SPEAK

Warren Hoge, United Nations Bureau Chief for The New York Times, will speak on “The United Nations in a Time of Change” at noon Tuesday (10/23) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. Hoge has held a wide range of jobs in more than 30 years at The New York Times, including metropolitan reporter, Rio de Janeiro bureau chief, editor of The New York Times Magazine, assistant managing editor for culture, and London bureau chief. MENAGHAN IS READING SERIES GUEST OCT. 23

Author John Menaghan will present a free public reading at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (10/23) in 311 Denney Hall, as part of the OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series. Menaghan is the winner of an Academy of American Poets Prize and has published two books, both with Salmon Poetry (Ireland): “All the Money in the World” (1999) and “She Alone” (2006). MILESTONES OF PUBLIC HEALTH PHOTO EXHIBIT OCT. 24-31

“Milestones: Accomplishments in Public Health Over the Last 100 Years” will be on display Wednesday (10/24)-Wednesday (10/31) in the second-floor lobby of Bricker Hall. The photo exhibit is free and open to the public. Hosted by the College of Public Health, the exhibit highlights 11 significant discoveries made in public health during the last 100 years. Sponsored by the Association of Schools of Public Health and Pfizer, the traveling exhibit will be displayed at schools of public health and other partnering organizations throughout the year.
