OSU FACULTY, RESEARCHERS CONTRIBUTE TO NOBEL PEACE PRIZE-WINNING CLIMATE EFFORT

Several OSU faculty/researchers were authors, reviewers or contributors to the reports by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shared the recently awarded 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. Faculty involved are: Lonnie Thompson, professor of geology and senior research scientist, Byrd Polar Research Center; Ellen Mosley-Thompson, professor of geography and senior research scientist, BPRC; David Bromwich, professor of geography; Jason E. Box, assistant professor of geography, research scientist, BPRC; C.K. Shum, professor of earth sciences (MAPS); Joel Johnson, professor of electrical and computer engineering; and Ryan Fogt, research scientist, BPRC (Ph.D., 2007 geography, part of Bromwich’s group and now on staff at the National Center for Atmospheric Research). WOSU FM CHANGES ENHANCE LOCAL CLASSICAL MUSIC; EXPANDS NPR AND LOCAL NEWS COVERAGE

In an effort to enhance WOSU’s local classical music programming while providing more local and national news to the community, WOSU Public Media will showcase local classical music hosts from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and add local news coverage from the award-winning WOSU news team and National Public Radio on WOSU 89.7 FM. The changes will take place in January, 2008. WOSU will continue to offer a 24/7 classical music service on the WOSU FM HD2 channel (available on HD Radio) or via WOSU’s classical music web stream at www.wosu.org. Programming on WOSU 820 AM will remain unchanged providing a high-quality, local news and talk service to the community including the long-running local call-in program Open Line with Fred Andrle. FESTIVAL OF PHYSICS SET FOR SATURDAY

OSU's Physics Department and COSI Columbus are presenting a Festival of Physics from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday (10/20) and noon-6 p.m. Sunday (10/21) at COSI, 333 W. Broad St. Festival activities include lectures by COSI and Ohio State faculty, hands-on experiments, and a superconductive square dance, and are included with the price of COSI admission. RILEY TO PRESENT PUZZLES OF A PACIFIC PARADISE OCT. 22

The Archaeological Institute of America will host a lecture by Thomas Riley, North Dakota State University on “Pigs, Rats and People: Puzzles of a Pacific Paradise” at 8 p.m. Monday (10/22) in 10 Page Hall. Many new kinds of evidence (biogeography, forensic DNA studies and the genetic history of non-native animals) are allowing a new understanding of the spread of humans across the islands of the Pacific Ocean. PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES OFFERS FREE ONLINE CATALOG OF IMAGES

The Office of Photography Services in University Relations is ofering to the university community a new Web site to provide easier access to quality images of facilities, people and activities. While many already use Photography Services for documenting events, enhancing publications, and a variety of other promotional purposes, the group now offers a free online catalog of low-resolution stock images. That catalog, as well as information about accessing services, can be found at http://photoservices.osu.edu/.

MEDICAL CENTER HOSTS COMMUNITY DIABETES EVENT

The OSU Medical Center will host a community event, in conjunction with a two-day Global Diabetes Summit, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St., from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday (12/1). The daylong event, geared for community members, will feature panel discussions, workshops, screenings, cooking demonstrations and exhibitions with diabetes-care professionals on-hand to answer questions. Jeffrey Levine, from the television show “The Biggest Loser,” is the keynote speaker. Register online, or call 273-0143. The $15 cost includes lunch and handout materials.

FISHER COLLEGE KICKS OFF 2008 DELOITTE BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION

The Center for Entrepreneurship at Fisher College of Business is hosting the 2008 Deloitte Business Plan Competition. If you have an idea to start your own business, form a team and compete for more than $145,000 in cash and services to use as start up funds. AMERICAN INDIAN WOMEN AND COLONIZATION IN 19TH CENTURY WISCONSIN

American Indian Studies is welcoming Lucy Murphy, author of A Gathering of Rivers: Indians, Metis, and Mining in the Western Great Lakes, 1737-1832 and co-editor of Midwestern Women: Work, Community, and Leadership at the Crossroads, for a lecture from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/24) in 40 Jennings Hall. THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS: A FASHION ICON

Beginning today (10/19), 60 of Ohio State’s Historic Costume and Textiles Collection little black dresses will be displayed for The Little Black Dress exhibition, located in Campbell Hall’s Geraldine Schottenstein Wing. The exhibit illustrates its namesake’s many facets from its beginnings in the late 1920s through the end of the 20th century. Read more >

GREEK AND ROMAN CLASSICS ON DISPLAY IN SULLIVANT LIBRARY

A display of Greek and Roman Classical Literature is on exhibit in University Libraries’ Sullivant Southwest Gallery, 286A Sullivant Hall, through the end of fall quarter. On display are "squeezes" of Greek and Roman monumental inscriptions from the Center for Epigraphical and Palaeographical Studies, and extensive collections of Greek and Roman Classics from the Loeb, Oxford and Teubner Classical Libraries. The display is sponsored by Nancy Courtney, classics subject specialist in the OSU Libraries, and the Center for Epigraphical and Palaeographical Studies in the Department of Greek and Latin. MEN'S BASKETBALL OPEN SCRIMMAGE SATURDAY AT VALUE CITY ARENA

The Ohio State men’s basketball team will hold a public scrimmage from noon-1 p.m. Saturday (10/20) in Value City Arena prior to the 3:30 p.m. Homecoming football game vs. Michigan State at Ohio Stadium. HOMECOMING, MARATHON TO IMPACT TRAFFIC, CABS SERVICE

Due to the Homecoming Parade today (10/19), several road closures and CABS service interruptions will occur. The following CABS routes will not run from approximately 5:30-8 p.m.: The Campus Loop North, Campus Loop South, East Residential, North Express, and the Library/Buckeye Village.
Due to the running of the Columbus Marathon on Sunday (10/21), several road closures and CABS service interruptions will occur. Because of these road closures, the Courtesy Shuttle will not run from approximately 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and the Library Buckeye Village will not begin service until approximately 3 p.m. Please anticipate traffic delays in these areas during these events.
