EIGHT OHIO STATE FACULTY AWARDED FULBRIGHT FELLOWSHIPS

Eight Ohio State faculty have been selected as recipients of prestigious Fulbright fellowships, selected by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which administers the program for the U.S. Department of State. Fellows will conduct research abroad, consult with international colleagues, and lecture to promote general global welfare. Fulbright fellowship recipients are: Robert Agunga, (Human and Community Resource Development); Denise Bronson, (Social Work); Wen Shyong (Charlie) Chern, (emeritus, Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics); Laura Justice (Teaching and Learning); Joy McCorriston (Anthropology); Christopher Reed (History); Duane Roller (emeritus, Greek and Latin); and D. MERSHON CENTER OPENS ANNUAL GRANT COMPETITION

Each year, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies holds a competition for Ohio State faculty and students to apply for research grant funds. Grants may be used for a variety of research purposes including travel, seminars, conferences, interviews, experiments, workshops and more. Applications must be for projects that relate to one or more of the Mershon Center’s three areas of focus: the use of force and diplomacy; the ideas, identities and decisional processes that affect security; and the institutions that manage violent conflict. The deadline is Monday (1/7/08). Details and application forms are available online (see the Grants section).

HADDEN TO PRESENT TAKE THIS JOB AND LOVE IT

Richard Hadden, highly acclaimed author of “Contented Cows Give Better Milk: The Plain Truth About Employee Relations and Your Bottom Line,” will present “Take This Job and Love It” from 3:30-5 p.m. today (10/22) in the Longaberger Alumni House. VOTER REGISTRATION AND DISABILITY AWARENESS EVENT TODAY

A Voter Registration and Disability Awareness event will take place from 3-5 p.m. today (10/22) in the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital Auditorium. The event features the Road to Freedom Bus presentation depicting the history of the disability rights movement with historic photos by Tom Olin. Speakers include Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner. The event is part of the Ohio Disability Vote Coalition’s statewide Get Out the Vote campaign. The coalition is a non-partisan non-profit group. The event is hosted by OSUMC Rehabilitative Medicine and the OSU ADA Coordinator’s Office. APPLY NOW FOR FALL 2007 FACULTY RESEARCH GRANTS

The Office of International Affairs is seeking applications for its Fall 2007 Faculty Research Grants. Grants up to $5,000 may be awarded in two categories: Interdisciplinary Lectures, Seminars and Conferences, and International Research Travel. International Affairs awards grants to fund research activities that support international themes and which contribute to the mission of the Area Studies Centers. Ohio State faculty, interdisciplinary areas and academic units are eligible to apply. The deadline for submission is Friday (11/16). SOCIETY FOR ETHNOMUSICOLOGY CONFERENCE OCT. 24-28

The OSU School of Music will host the annual meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology, “Music, War and Reconciliation” from Wednesday (10/24)-Sunday (10/28). The conference will take place primarily at the Hyatt on Capitol Square, with several events on campus Saturday afternoon at Weigel Hall. SECURITY TIP FROM THE CIO: TURN ON YOUR FIREWALL

Windows and Macintosh computers come with their own firewalls, which protect from attack by unseen web or network computers. Turn them on and don't disable them for any reason while working on a network or the Internet.

HEALTH BASIC TRAINING FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN FREE SCREENINGS

Health Basic Training for African-American Men is offering free diabetes, blood pressure and dental screenings beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday (10/27) at Columbus Public Health, 240 Parsons Ave. (second floor). At 6 p.m. Fred Johnson Jr. will present “Becoming an Effective and Empowered Healthcare Consumer.” Free food and admission, but registration is required. The student organization Buckeyes for Obama are helping to organize and host a Countdown for Change Rally with special guest speaker Barack Obama on Friday (10/26) at the Convention Center, 400 N.
