Headline newsOHIO STATE LEADS COUNTRY AGAIN IN AAAS FELLOWSFor the fourth time in the last five years, Ohio State leads the country in having the most faculty chosen as “fellows” of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest scientific organization. The announcement, carried in the latest issue of the journal Science, recognizes 15 Ohio State faculty for outstanding accomplishments in their respective academic disciplines, as decided by their peers. This year’s honorees include: Kathleen Boris-Lawrie, professor of veterinary
biosciences and of molecular virology, immunology, and medical genetics; John
Byrd, professor of pharmacy and associate professor of hematology and oncology;
Kenneth Chan, professor of pharmacy and internal medicine; Larry Copeland,
professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology; Matthew During, professor
of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics; Richard Furnstahl,
professor of physics; Somnath Ghosh, professor of materials science engineering
and of mechanical engineering; Lee F. Johnson, emeritus professor of molecular
genetics; Linda Lobao, professor of rural sociology, sociology and geography;
Edward Malecki, professor of geography and in the John Glenn School of Public
Affairs; Susan Mallery, professor of oral pathology and of pathology; Dennis
McKay, professor of pharmacy; Melvin Moeschberger, professor of statistics
and professor emeritus in the College of Public Health; David Murray, professor
of epidemiology; and Steven Schwartz, professor of food science and technology.

PHI DELTA KAPPA SELECTS MOORE AS AN INTERNATIONAL EMERGING LEADERPhi Delta Kappa International , an international
organization for professional educators, has named James L. Moore III, as an
Emerging Leader, the latest of a series of honors for the Counselor Education
faculty member in the College of Education and Human Ecology. Only 13 candidates
worldwide were given the Emerging Leader designation in 2007. Moore received
the honor at a ceremony held Friday (10/19), during the PDK Summit on Global
Education in Vancouver, British Columbia. Moore is an associate professor in
the School of Physical Activity and Educational Services and a faculty member
in the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Read
more > INCISIONLESS SURGERY TO CORRECT ACID REFLUX DISEASESurgeons at the OSU Medical Center have performed the first incisionless operations
in the United States using a device known as EsophyX - recently approved by
the Food and Drug Administration to stop gastroesophageal reflux disease. The
Medical Center is one of the nation’s leaders in incisionless surgery,
a new procedure that leaves no outside scarring; results in minimal, if any,
post-operative pain; reduces patients’ recovery time significantly; and
is expected to be one of the next major medical advancements. The mechanism
has been proven safe and effective in patients treated throughout Europe for
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as heartburn. Read
more > OSU MARION CAMPUS PROACTIVE WITH MRSA REPORTIn the wake of recently reported Methicillan Resistant Staphyloccus Aureaus
infections (MRSA) in some area school districts, Ohio State Marion pro-actively
implemented intensified sanitation efforts two weeks ago in all university
facilities on the Marion campus and the OSU Delaware Center. When a student
reported a diagnosis of the MRSA infection late Wednesday evening, the university
responded promptly sending an e-mail communication to notify all students,
faculty and staff and individually notify those sharing a classroom with the
student. The campus continues to monitor the situation and will take appropriate
actions as necessary. OSU Marion Director of Student Affairs C. Michael Short
said students are not in danger and classes will continue as scheduled. Anyone

Lecture from 3:30-5 p.m. today (10/26) in 040 Scott Lab. The guest speaker
is Judith Seltzer, professor of sociology at UCLA. In addition, the first annual
Graduate Student Conference on Population, co-sponsored by OSU and Bowling
Green will take place today (10/26) in 243 Journalism Building. Session I,
Family Demography is scheduled for 10-11:30 a.m. followed by Session II, Population

more > ESHUN-BAIDEN TO DISCUSS EQUITABLE PARTICIPATION IN POLITICSNemata Eshun-Baiden from the Sierra Leone Women’s Working Group will
be speaking at 4 p.m. Monday (10/29) in Saxbe Auditorium, Drinko Hall about
recent work done by the group to help advance legislation in Sierra Leone for
the rights of women, and how they are, in general, shaping public opinion with
regard to women's participation in politics. The 50/50

Democratic Institute. BIRNBAUM TO DISCUSS CULTURAL LANDSCAPES OCT. 29Charles A. Birnbaum, executive director of The Cultural Landscape Foundation,
will present “Patronage and Design” at 6 p.m. Monday (10/29) in
250 Knowlton Hall. Birnbaum founded TCLF to increase the public’s awareness
of cultural landscapes though education. Previously, he served as coordinator
of the National Park Service Historic Landscape Initiative and published “Pioneers
of American Landscape Design,” a reference guide. He recently was awarded
the LaGasse Medal in recognition of his leadership in management and conservancy
of natural resources and public landscapes. Read
