Ohio State awarded prestigious Materials Research Center

The National Science Foundation on Tuesday (9/30) announced that Ohio State would receive $10.8 million to establish a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center. With this, the university joins a national network of 27 MRSECs that foster active collaboration between universities and industry. To the $10.8 million in NSF funds, the university will add a $6.2 million cost share, bringing the total funds to $17 million. Nitin Padture, OSU professor of materials science and engineering will serve as director of the Center for Emergent Materials, which will marshal Ohio State’s considerable expertise in electronic materials. Chancellor Fingerhut to help dedicate OSU Newark facility

Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut and Ohio State Newark Dean/Director William L. MacDonald are among those set to provide remarks at a dedication ceremony for the John L. and Christine Warner Library and Student Center at 1 p.m. Friday (10/3) on the Ohio State Newark/Central Ohio Technical College campus. The event will include a formal ribbon cutting and tour of the building, which opened for classes fall quarter 2008, and a performance by the University Chorus. Ohio Solar Tour to involve OSU campus Oct. 4

The 2008 Central Ohio Solar Tour, part of the statewide Ohio Solar Tour, will have a strong Ohio State presence on Saturday (10/4). The OSU/Clintonville leg of the tour will kick off at 10 a.m. at the OSU Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Building. Cars can be left at the 4-H building and buses will take pedestrians to the three other OSU sites: the Solar Decathlon’s “Pod” at Agricultural Engineering Building, the Nanotech West PV Research Lab, and the Wetlands, which uses PV powered equipment. University’s Annual Security Report is now available

A copy of Ohio State’s Annual Security Report is now available. The report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by Ohio State, and on public property immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies concerning sexual assault, and other matters. Libraries' ReadAloud program kicks off Oct. 2

The Libraries ReadAloud program resumes Thursday (10/2) from 3-4 p.m. in the Wexner Center Cafe. The university community is invited to participate in a special program: Reading Warhol. The Initiative in Population Research will host its second Annual Joan Huber Population Lecture from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday (10/3) at The Blackwell Inn, 140 Pfahl Hall. Eck to deliver Linking Drug Discovery to Successful Products

Stephen L. Eck, vice president for Translational Medicine and Pharmacogenomics, Eli Lilly & Co. will present "Linking Drug Discovery to Successful Products," in the College of Pharmacy Distinguished Lecture Series, at 11:30 a.m. Friday (10/3) in 111 Parks Hall. Eck studies genetic contributions to diseases and drug response, supporting development of new medicines with novel mechanisms of action through application of pharmacogenomics, proteomics, metabonomics and RNA profiling. The Institute for Chinese Studies will launch its Future of the Past Lecture Series at 2:30 p.m. Friday (10/3) in 136 Jennings Hall. William Sargent, H.A. Crosby Forbes Curator, Peabody Essex Museum, will present "Send Us No More Dragons…: Chinese Porcelains and Decorative Art for the Western Market.” The lecture will discuss the history and art of China trade.
