Oct. 3: Ohio Utilities Commission chairman to discuss Regulation in Reality

Alan Schriber, chair of the Public Utilities Commission will present "Regulation in Reality: Where Economics and Politics Converge," from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday (10/3) in 1080 Physics Research Building. The lecture is part of the Environmental Science Graduate Program seminar series being presented by the OSU Institute for Energy and the Environment. Scrimp and Save, but still eat healthy

Eating healthy should not be placed on the back burner during tight economic times when money, stress and busy schedules all come into play, according to an expert in nutrition at the OSU Medical Center. Cutting corners to save money is a natural reaction when finances are short, but healthy eating is still possible - and even more important, says Shirley Kindrick, registered dietitian in the Comprehensive Weight Management Program. With food prices at new highs, Kindrick said there are plenty of low-cost and highly nutritious foods and methods to prepare dishes that can stretch budgets while making them healthy. Read more >

Faculty, staff tickets available Oct. 7 for Kidder event

Tickets will be available to faculty and staff on Tuesday (10/7) to join Mountains Beyond Mountains author Tracy Kidder in a discussion and book signing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (10/14) in Mershon Auditorium. Kidder has won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Award, among other literary prizes. Tickets for faculty and staff can be picked up in 120 Enarson Hall. Tickets for First Year students are available through the First Year Success Series web site.

Comparative Oncology Discussion Group meetings start Oct. 3

Does your research or educational mission involve cancer or do you mentor or teach someone who studies cancer? Are you personally interested in cancer? The College of Veterinary Medicine invites you to attend the Comparative Oncology Signature Program Meetings, beginning at 8 a.m. Friday (10/3) in 141 Veterinary Medicine Academic Building. The program encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to solving research challenges in the study of cancer. The program is resuming meetings after a summer hiatus and the first meeting will be primarily organizational. Contact: Melissa Weber at 292-3752

Julie Graber is Oct. 16 ASFW luncheon speaker

Julie Graber of the Institute on Women, Gender, and Public Policy at Ohio State will present “The Power of You” during the first Association of Staff and Faculty Women luncheon of the academic year, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday (10/16) in the Faculty Club. Graber will discuss the state of women’s power in Ohio and across the U.S., and offer up a set of “power tools” that can help women lead and communicate more powerfully on a daily basis. Students encouraged to apply now for study abroad scholarships

Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to apply now for study abroad scholarships. Three scholarships administered by the Office of International Affairs are now available and applications are being accepted. The Wolfe, Firebaugh and Endowed Fund scholarships have the potential to provide a number of students with funds to help pay for their study abroad programs. For details, visit http://oia.osu.edu.

Ohio State Mansfield offers Health Care as a Civil Right Oct. 7

The Ohio State Mansfield Arts and Lectures Series is offering a panel discussion, “Health Care as a Civil Right” at noon Tuesday (10/7) in the Eisenhower Student Union. ADD, ADHD and Autism Oct. 7

"ADD, ADHD and Autism," a discussion facilitated by Tom Fish, director, Family and Employment Services, Nisonger Center, will take place from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday (10/7) in 155 Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. Learn about detection, diagnosis and available treatments for children with ADD, ADHD, and autism. Register online. WMSN provides a monthly brown-bag lunch venue for Ohio State women (students, staff and faculty) to discuss and find support for issues related to work/life balance and work/life integration.

2009 Staff Career Development Grants - now accepting applications

Staff Career Development Grants of up to $500 each are awarded annually to offset education and training costs needed to further staff career goals and professional development. The grant can be used toward expenses such as conference fees, registration fees, tuition, textbooks, research supplies, and transportation costs - for activities that occur during calendar year 2009. You must be a regular full-time or part-time staff member and have at least two years of continuous employment with Ohio State by Thursday (1/1/09). Applications are available online. Apply by Monday (10/27).

OSU hosts Midwest International Economics and Economic Theory Meetings

Ohio State's Department of Economics is hosting the Fall 2008 Midwest International Economics & Economic Theory Meetings, Friday (10/3)-Sunday (10/5). Session topics include Nonlinear Income Taxes, Political Economy, Industrial Organization, Game Theory, Auctions, Private-Value Environments, Market Economies, and much more.
