Thompson named one of Time’s “Heroes of the Environment”

Ohio State glaciologist Lonnie Thompson has been singled out by Time magazine as one of the publication’s 30 “Heroes of the Environment” for 2008. Thompson, a distinguished university professor of earth sciences, is highlighted in the magazine’s Oct. 6 issue as one of six scientists and innovators who are key to addressing global climate change. He was nominated for his three decades of research showing that tropical and temperate ice caps around the globe would be among the first harbingers of climate change. Thompson has led more than 50 expeditions to ice caps and glaciers on five continents, retrieving ice cores that contain a diary of past climate conditions, some dating back farther than 750,000 years. Oct. 10: Mansoor to deliver Department of History Alumni Scholars Lecture

Retired U.S. Army Colonel Peter Mansoor, General Raymond E. Mason Jr. Chair in the Department of History and the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, will speak on the topic of his new book, "Baghdad at Sunrise: A Brigade Commander's War in Iraq," a memoir of his experience in Iraq, where he served as a brigade commander and as executive officer to General David Petraeus. Talk of the Nation broadcasts live from WOSU@COSI Oct. 8

NPR’s Talk of the Nation will broadcast live from WOSU@COSI from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday (10/8). The first hour will feature a presidential debate recap with NPR’s political editor Ken Rudin. Also, Sherri Geldin from the Wexner Center will discuss the Warhol exhibition. The second hour of the program will feature a discussion about the role race plays in Ohio’s election with john a. powell, director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. The program will broadcast live on WOSU 820 AM and WOSU OHIO (digital TV channel). It also will stream on the web at www.wosu.org/totn.

Annual Reception Honoring Women's Progress Oct. 13

The university community is invited to the 2008 Annual Reception Honoring Women's Progress at Ohio State, to be held from 4:30-6 p.m. Monday (10/13) at the Longaberger Alumni House. President E. UFSAP offers stress management workshop

The University Faculty and Staff Assistance Program will offer its popular Stress Management workshop on Wednesday (10/8), (11/12) and (12/10) - you only need to attend one. Learn how to identify and measure stress and techniques and tools to help you manage it on a daily basis. Participants will receive a free stress taming CD. Family Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness Training Oct. 14

Human Resources is offering an interactive presentation that will allow participants to increase their knowledge about family violence and relationship abuse, improve their comfort level with intervening, and increase their knowledge about available family violence resources. Ohio State Mansfield concert honors 50th anniversary

In honor of Ohio State Mansfield's 50th Anniversary, Tony Pasquarello, faculty emeritus, will perform a free concert, “Fifty Years of Fabulous Favorites,” on the concert grand piano on Sunday (10/12) in the John and Pearl Conard Performance Hall in Riedl Hall. Special focus will be given to music of 1958, the first year OSU classes were offered in Mansfield, and 1966, the year the campus opened. Contact: Rodger C. Oct. 7 Science Café explores Prairies of Marion County

Ohio State Marion invites the community to the Infinity Restaurant in the historic Harding Hotel, 267 W. Center St. in downtown Marion, for the next Science Café at 7 p.m. Tuesday (10/7). The discussion centers on the Prairies of Marion County, presented by Larry Yoder, associate professor emeritus at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, Goshen College, Indiana. College of Medicine hosts health literacy workshop Oct. 14-15

The OSU College of Medicine AHEC office will be hosting a two-day workshop at the University Plaza Conference Center from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday (10/14) and Wednesday (10/15). Featured speaker is Sue Stableford, an expert in the health literacy and plain language field. Day one focuses on Health Literacy: A Quality & Patient Safety Imperative; day two is Health Literacy and Chronic Disease Management. Registration is $75/two days or $50/one day. Africa in the Age of Globalization symposium Oct. 17

The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will present a symposium on "Africa in the Age of Globalization" from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday (10/17) at the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. Speakers will present research and share observations on the benefits and costs of globalization and the role it has played in Africa’s present state of affairs. Entrepreneurial faculty: Advancing innovation in a university setting

Faculty interested in entrepreneurship and innovation are invited to the Blackwell Inn Ballroom at 3 p.m. Thursday (10/16) to hear Lesa Mitchell, vice president of the Kauffman Foundation. Mitchell has been responsible for the Foundation's frontier work in understanding the policy levers that influence the advancement of innovation from universities into the commercial market.
