Geography’s Centennial celebrated with alumni speaker series

Ellen Mosley-Thompson, OSU professor and Distinguished University Scholar, senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center and Ohio State alum, is the featured speaker for the Department of Geography’s 2008-09 Centennial Colloquium Series. Mosley-Thompson will deliver “Unique Insights to Earth’s Climate History Preserved in its Cryosphere,” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (10/9) in 100 Stillman Hall. Gas prices are up, food prices continue to rise, homeowners continue to struggle through the mortgage crisis, and the credit crunch is squeezing wallets. For those struggling during the current financial crisis, OSU Extension can be an invaluable organization to turn to. From basic financial education to coping with bankruptcy, OSU Extension offers a wide variety of management programs and resources designed to help individuals and families better manage their money and get back on track to financial stability. Bryn Mawr Summer Leadership Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration

The Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration, co-sponsored with Bryn Mawr College, each year attracts approximately 75 women administrators and faculty from the U.S., Canada and Africa for the four-week residential program on the Bryn Mawr College campus. The curriculum prepares participants to work on issues currently facing higher education. Each year Ohio State sends several faculty and staff women to the institute. OSU faculty and staff women are invited to a brown bag lunch from noon-1 p.m. Thursday (10/9) at The Women's Place, 400 Stillman Hall, to learn from past attendees about the Bryn Mawr Summer Leadership Institute for Women (HERS). Clyde Wilcox to discuss Religion and Voting in 2008

The Center for the Study of Religion presents the first lecture in its "At-Large Lectures in Religion, 2008-09" at 4:30 p.m. Monday (10/13) in 090 Science and Engineering Library. Clyde Wilcox of Georgetown University will deliver a timely address entitled "Closing the God Gap? Religion and Voting in 2008." All are welcome and there is no admission. Contact: 688-8010

Fire hydrant winterization taking place on campus

Facilities Operations and Development Utilities is currently winterizing all university fire hydrants. The City of Columbus mandates all privately owned fire hydrants to be pumped free of water from Oct. 15 through April 15 every year. Fire hydrant winterization includes removing water from the barrel section to eliminate the possibility of freezing, leaving the hydrant inoperable. Therefore, if anyone uses a fire hydrant for any reason Utilities should be notified immediately. Autumn Resources newsletter now available online

The autumn issue of Resources, Human Resources’ quarterly newsletter, is now available online at hr.osu.edu/resources. This issue includes information about the upcoming benefits Open Enrollment, planning ahead for children’s doctor visits, and the new Your Plan for Health web site launching at the end of October, plus more information about work, life, and health.

Medical Center hosts conference on Personalized Health Care

The Personalized Health Care conference, a national conference focusing on topics ranging from research in personalized medicine to clinical applications in patient care, is scheduled for Thursday (10/16)-Friday (10/17) at the Biomedical Research Tower Auditorium. It features internationally renowned speakers in personalized medicine, as well as panel discussions by experts from academia, industry, government and nonprofit organizations. Registration now open for Fisher's Deloitte Business Plan Competition

The Center for Entrepreneurship at the Fisher College of Business is hosting the 2009 Deloitte Business Plan Competition. If you have an idea to start your own business, form a team and compete for more than $145,000 in cash and services to use as start up funds to transform your idea into a thriving business. Each team must have at least one Ohio State student and all current OSU students, faculty or staff are eligible to participate. Register your team at entrepreneurship.osu.edu. College planning session set for Oct. 21

The office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is offering a college planning session for Ohio State faculty and staff with children in grades 7-10, from noon- 1 p.m. Tuesday (10/21) in 172 Newton Hall. The brown bag lunch session will help parents understand open and competitive admissions processes, how high school courses affect a child’s chances of being admitted to college, and strategies for paying for college. Pizzuti to speak on art collecting at Columbus Museum of Art

Art collector Ron Pizzuti will discuss "Contemporary Collecting from Local to Global” at 2 p.m. Sunday (10/12) at the Columbus Museum of Art, in conjunction with the Objects of Wonder from Ohio State exhibition. Volunteers, participants sought for autism walk

Faculty, staff and student volunteers are needed to assist in the Columbus Walk Now for Autism to be held Sunday (10/12) at the Schottenstein Center. Registration and a resource fair begin at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. The event is part of Autism Speaks' signature fundraising and awareness event, taking place in communities across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
