Global climate challenges tackled at Ohio State conference
Journalists from around the nation and the world will descend on the Ohio State campus for the McCormick Foundation Climate Change Conference, being held Sunday (10/12)-Tuesday (10/14). Top reporters and editors from as far away as New South Wales, Australia and as close as Columbus will explore a broad expanse of climate change issues with scientists and policy experts from across the country, including many from Ohio State. A well-known assembly of environmental scientists and policy experts, including Lonnie Thompson, an ice-core study pioneer at OSU and winner of the 2005 National Medal of Science, will lead the discussions. (MSP)2: Middle School Portal - Math & Science Pathways
Kimberly Lightle, principal investigator, School of Teaching & Learning, College of Education and Human Ecology, has received a $2.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation to expand the work of the NSDL Middle School Portal. Lightle and colleagues from the National Middle School Association and Education Development Center have been funded to assume a stewardship role for middle level educators of mathematics and science by expanding the portal and sharing resources across organizations. Foley to deliver University Distinguished Lecture Oct. 14
Edward Foley, Robert M. Duncan/Jones Day Designated Professor in Law and director, Election Law @ Moritz, will deliver a 2008-09 University Distinguished Lecture, "The Original Bush vs. Gore: An Historical Perspective on Disputed Elections" at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (10/14) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. The lecture will be broadcast live, worldwide, and archived for future downloading at www.osu.edu/lecture. Check this site for lecture details as well.
Classroom feedback sought from faculty; forums scheduled
The Classroom Readiness Committee and the University Registrar invite faculty and instructors to provide feedback on Ohio State’s instructional spaces. As part of a larger study on classrooms and the instructional environment, the committee will be conducting two town hall forums for faculty to share concerns about and share ideas for enhancements to classrooms on campus. Forums will be held from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday (10/14) in 001 Jennings Hall, and from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/15) in 050 Jennings. Parents Holding Doctorates meetings set for Oct. 13, 15
Parents Holding Doctorates is a new program to help stay-at-home parents who wish to explore novel ways to use their training and expertise. Interested parties should attend one of two organizational meetings to be held at the Museum of Biological Diversity, 1315 Kinnear Road, at 7 p.m. Monday (10/13) or 1 p.m. Wednesday (10/15). 2009 University Libraries' Course Enhancement Grants
University Libraries is currently accepting proposals for the 2009 Course Enhancement Grant program. Grants of $2,000 will be given to instructors for the enhancement of courses by substantially integrating library resources and/or incorporating information literacy instruction. As part of its Events on Teaching series, Faculty & TA Development is offering Facilitating Classroom Discussion, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday (10/15) in 150 Younker Success Center. Class discussion can be an effective method for getting students involved in most types of classes. Family Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness Training
This interactive presentation will allow participants to increase their knowledge about family violence and relationship abuse, improve their comfort level with intervening, and increase their knowledge about available family violence resources. Fans needed for NCAA Women's Final Four site visit
Columbus is in the running to host the NCAA Women's Final Four between 2012 and 2016. Ohio State hopes to put its best face on for an official site visit on Wednesday (10/15). NCAA staff and Women's Basketball Committee members will take a bus tour through campus. Athletics is recruiting students, faculty and staff to stand and cheer at three campus area sites as the NCAA site visit bus goes by.
