Today: Clyde Wilcox to discuss religion and voting

Professor Clyde Wilcox of Georgetown University will discuss "Closing the God Gap? Religion and Voting in 2008" at 4:30 pm today (10/13) in 090 Science and Engineering Library. The lecture is the first in the Center for the Study of Religion's "At-Large Lectures in Religion, 2008-09" series. All are welcome. There is no admission and refreshments will be served. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. On Research blog captures action from GridFest at the Large Hadron Collider

Research Communications staffer Pam Frost Gorder was the only university science writer invited to last month's GridFest at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. Along with journalists from around the world, she was briefed on the massive high-speed computer network that will link computer systems around the globe and transfer enough data every five seconds to fill a standard DVD. In the first of four entries set for this week on the blog "On Research," Gorder offers a glimpse of how these physicists observe the smallest bits of the universe. Read more >

Former foreign service officer to Moscow is lecture guest

Dick Combs, former foreign service officer and specialist in Soviet and Eastern European affairs, will speak from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/22) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. Combs will discuss his latest book Inside the Soviet Alternate Universe: The Cold War's End and the Soviet Union's Fall Reappraised. onCampus is looking to talk with a few faculty and staff who plan to work a polling station during the Nov. 4 general election. People who have volunteered during previous elections are welcome to share their experiences as well. This article will not focus on personal politics but on the decision to participate in the electoral process. New online tool for OSU research teams

The Office of Research announces a new web-based tool that allows investigators, key personnel and additional contacts to view IRB, IACUC, and IBC records. The tool can also be used to check the status of CITI, Animal Use, and Biosafety training completion as well as the submission of financial Conflict of Interest disclosures. The Protocol Lookup link and brief video tutorial can be found on the Office of Responsible Research Practices homepage at: www.orrp.osu.edu

2009-2010 freshman seminar call for proposals

The Freshman Seminar program has instituted a new rolling deadline for Freshman Seminar proposals. Tenure-track faculty are invited to propose a one or two credit Freshman Seminar for the upcoming academic year (2009-2010). Proposals are now due on a quarterly basis the year before the seminar will be taught. Seminars to be taught Autumn Quarter are due Monday (12/1); Winter Quarter due Sunday (3/1/09); Spring Seminars are due Monday (6/1/09). ACE Ohio Women's Network Annual Conference

The ACE Ohio Women's Network Annual Conference is being hosted Friday (11/7) at the University of Dayton. A networking reception is scheduled from 6-7:30 pm. Thursday (11/6). "Aspiration to Accomplishment: Celebrating 10 years of Advancing Women Leaders in Ohio" features two keynote speakers, relevant break-out sessions and a President's Panel. Schedule a 20-minute appointment for your free biometric screening, available to faculty and staff Monday-Friday at a number of locations around campus. Offered through Your Plan for Health, a biometric screening measures vital health values such as blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight and height that can be used to complete the Personal Health Assessment. Completing the online PHA questionnaire annually qualifies you to earn a discount on your monthly medical premiums and participate in the Your Plan for Health Incentive Program. TELR invites applications for expertise grant; info session Oct. 15

The Expertise Grants program enables faculty to collaborate with TELR eLearning consultants to develop their ideas for teaching and learning with technology. Grants may be applied to project prototyping or course-level innovation. Faculty can request from 20 to 100 hours of TELR assistance, as well as up to $10,000 in funding, to support their project. Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion & Disability conference call for papers

Session proposals are due Saturday (11/1) for the Ninth Annual Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion & Disability: Change, Challenge, & Collaboration, to be held Tuesday (4/28/09) and Wednesday (4/29/09) on the Columbus campus. Student posters are due Monday (3/30/09). The conference continues the university's efforts to bring together a diverse audience to explore disability as both an individual experience and social reality that cuts across typical divisions of education and employment; scholarship and service; business and government; race, gender and ethnicity. Documentary film screening examines roles of race and gender in politics

In a timely prelude to the 2008 election, two documentary films dealing with issues of race and gender in relation to politics will be featured and discussed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (10/21) and Wednesday (10/22). The film screening, presented by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity, will be held in the OSU EA Building, 209 W. 18th St. The screenings are free and open to the public and will be followed by a discussion panel led by Moritz College of Law faculty, Vincene Verdun, associate professor of law, Daniel Tokaji, associate professor of law, and Hasan Kwame Jeffries, assistant professor of History. OSU Clinical Research Professionals meeting Oct. 16

Radiology is the second highest utilized area for research services. As a result many have questions about radiology and research in OSUHS. Representatives from Radiology, Scheduling, Registration, the Wright Center for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging and the Research Billing Office will be present at an OSU Clinical Research Professionals meeting, from noon-1 p.m. Thursday (10/16) in 234 Meiling Hall to answer questions about the new registration process for radiology research visits and operational aspects of performing radiology research at OSUHS. Department of Industrial, Interior, and Visual Communication Design 40th anniversary event

Alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the Department of Industrial, Interior, and Visual Communication Design at Ohio State's Colleges of Arts and Humanities, are invited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the formal founding of the Department on Saturday (11/1). The day-long event will include presentations from alumni through the decades, sharing of past achievements and future goals, presentations of distinguished alumni awards, displays of student work, and an evening gathering and celebration.
