New operating room treats brain, spinal conditions under one 'roof'
One of only a few of its kind in the world, an innovative surgical suite designed to treat a variety of brain and spinal cord injuries under one “roof” is now in operation at the OSU Medical Center. Equipped with advanced imaging technology and sophisticated medical machinery, the minimally invasive endovascular and vascular suite provides the most efficient and safest environment for a patient’s surgical care, according to Louis Caragine Jr., director of endovascular neurosurgery at the Medical Center. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. WOSU to air Congressional District debates
WOSU 820 AM and WOSU TV will air live coverage of Ohio’s 12th and 15th Congressional District debates at WOSU@COSI, to be moderated by WOSU’s Mike Thompson. The 15th Congressional District debate between Don Elijah Eckhart, Mary Jo Kilroy, and Steve Stivers will air at 8 p.m. Thursday (10/16). The 12th Congressional District debate between David Robinson and Pat Tiberi will air at 8 p.m. Thursday (10/23). Both events are sponsored by WOSU Public Media and the Columbus Metropolitan Club. China Plural: Local Identity, Contesting Visions, and Constructing Nation Oct. 17

Keeler to discuss climate change policy and electric utility regulation
Andy Keeler, professor of Environmental Economics and Policy at the John Glenn School of Public Affairs, will deliver "Climate Change Policy and U.S. Electric Utility Regulation" at 3:30 p.m. Friday (10/17) in 1080 Physics Research Building. On Research blog looks at future of data accessibility from The Grid
The scope of The Grid - the computer network supporting the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN laboratory in Switzerland - is as mind-boggling as the monster machinery comprising the facility's accelerators and detectors. But much to her surprise, Research Communications staffer Pam Frost Gorder learned that researchers around the globe will soon be able to tap that data network using only a smart phone or a PDA. In the third offering this week from the blog "On Research," she says that the idea that future scientists will use cell phones to assess their data seems incredible, but that's what the future holds. Ohio EPA director is Oct. 20 Water Expo guest speaker
The Water Environment Federation/American Water Works Association Buckeye Student Chapter, a new student organization, is hosting the first annual Water Expo at 6 p.m. Monday (10/20) in E100 Scott Lab. The one-hour event is open to the OSU community. Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski will discuss current water/wastewater issues, the future of water, and water/wastewater careers and fields. Human Resources offers ADA Audio Conference Series
The Columbus portion of the National Network of DBTAC-Regional ADA Centers 2008-09 ADA Audio Conference Series, hosted by OSU's Human Resources in collaboration with ADA-OHIO, offers sessions that are free and open to the public on the Columbus Campus. Starting with an ADA Case Law Update on Tuesday (10/21), sessions take place from 2-3:30 p.m. in the Gateway Building, 1590 N. High St. (room 421). The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience will welcome Neil deGrasse Tyson as the First-Year Distinguished Speaker at 7 p.m. Thursday (10/30) in Weigel Hall Auditorium. Director of the Hayden Planetarium and one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2007, Tyson will deliver “The Cosmic Perspective: How the Astrophysicist Views Life, the Universe, and Everything."
