Four OSU faculty to share more than $2 million in NSF CAREER awards
Four OSU professors were among young researchers recently honored by the National Science Foundation with its Faculty Early Career Development award, which recognizes a young researcher’s dual commitment to scholarship and education. The award winners are:
- Dennis Bong, assistant professor of chemistry, $750,000 for “Scope and Limitations of Selective Membrane Fusion.”
- Samir Ghadiali, associate professor of biomedical engineering, $375,000 for “Mechanobiology of Microbubble Induced Cellular Injury in the Pulmonary System.”
- Mark Moritz, assistant professor of anthropology, $530,000 for “Pastoral Management of Open Access: The Emergence of a Complex Adaptive System.”
- Dongping Zhong, assistant professor of chemistry and associate professor of physics, $650,000 for “Hydration Dynamics and Molecular Recognition.”

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. New undergraduate major in Biomedical Engineering approved
A new undergraduate major in Biomedical Engineering for the Department of Biomedical Engineering was approved Tuesday (10/7) by the Board of Regents. BME has had a graduate program since 1971 and an undergraduate minor that started several years ago. The department will begin with a small cadre of up to 25 exceptional students winter quarter and continue to ramp up to full capacity in the coming years (up to 75 students per class). OSU Mansfield sponsors campus/community discussion groups
The Mansfield campus is sponsoring a series of discussion groups from Monday (10/20)-Friday (10/24) regarding the book Radical Equations by Robert Moses, the 2008 OSU-M Distinguished Diversity Speaker. Moses was among the most important organizers of the voting rights effort in Mississippi in the 1960s. Since then he has spent decades fighting for educational opportunity as the central civil rights battle of the present era. Economics hosts annual macroeconomics seminar Oct. 20
The Department of Economics is hosting its annual JMCB Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Monday (10/20) in 800 Fisher Hall. Lars Peter Hansen, the Homer J. Livingston Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago will discuss “Fragile Beliefs and Pricing.” The lecture is free and open to the public. Super (Health) Screening Day Oct. 24
Still need to get your biometric screening this year? The Wellness Program will host a Super Screening Day from 8 a.m.-noon Friday (10/24) in Ramseyer Hall for faculty and staff. The screenings measure blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and Body Mass Index - health values that can be used to complete the Personal Health Assessment, which must be taken by Wednesday (12/31) to earn your $180 medical premium reduction in 2009. Service-learning "S" designation workshop Oct. 24
Learn about the Service-Learning "S" designation during a workshop from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday (10/24) in 156 University Hall. Service-learning courses at Ohio State can be identified with an S suffix, making it easier for students to find service-learning courses and providing standards for course design across the university. The Service-Learning Initiative will explain the process of applying for the designation, how applications are reviewed, and how the S can add value to courses. Register online.
Real life subject of TV's Homeless to Harvard to lecture Oct. 29
Liz Murray, the real life subject of Lifetime TV's Homeless to Harvard will guest lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/29) in 0001 Jennings Auditorium. Homeless at age 15 after the death of her mother, Murray describes how she overcame incredible odds to finish high school in just two years while living on the streets. OSU's Digital Storytelling team invites you to apply for an intensive, hands-on Digital Storytelling workshop to be held Monday (12/15)-Wednesday (12/17).
