The Bridge on the River Kwai, one of the greatest war-time epics of all time, screens this Friday as part of the Wexner Center's Retrospective: David Lean series. The film demonstrates Lean’s ability to develop and unfold drama as the plot follows an increasingly unstable British commander (Alec Guinness) in a Japanese POW camp. Nahata elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies
The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies recently elected to membership Milap Nahata, OSU professor of pharmacy and chair of the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Administration at the College of Pharmacy. Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine; it recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Nahata is the first person with a pharmacy background to be appointed to the IOM from Ohio and joins a highly select group of pharmacist members (less than 10) in the country. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Mercier wins Staff Arts and Crafts Exhibit People’s Choice Award
Michael Mercier has garnered the coveted Staff Arts and Crafts Exhibit People’s Choice Award for “Treasure Chest,” a wooden chest created from recycled materials. Mercier, a first time exhibitor in the show, works in Facilities Operations and Development - McCracken Power Plant. Homecoming activities taking place through Oct. 26
Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the festivities around campus during Homecoming 2008. Specifically the signature events of the week are the Homecoming Parade on Friday (10/24) through campus and the Step, Stride, or Swim benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research on Sunday (10/26). Film screening examines roles of race and gender in politics
Two documentary films dealing with issues of race and gender in relation to politics will be featured and discussed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (10/21) and Wednesday (10/22). Screenings of Chisholm ’72 Unbought & Unbossed and Street Fight, presented by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity, will be held in the OSU EA Building, 209 W. 18th St. The screenings are free and open to the public. A panel discussion will follow, led by Moritz College of Law faculty Vincene Verdun and Daniel Tokaji, and Hasan Kwame Jeffries, assistant professor of history. Read more >
Dance hosts lecture, demo by feminist scholar Ann Cooper Albright
Performer, choreographer and feminist scholar Ann Cooper Albright will present a lecture/demonstration in the Department of Dance from 8:45-10 a.m. Thursday (10/23) in Sullivant Hall Theatre (SU 105). Cooper Albright is professor of Dance and Theater at Oberlin College, founding director of Girls in Motion, an after school program for middle school girls, and co-director of a web-based teaching initiative, Accelerated Motion: Towards a New Dance Literacy in America. iMAGINE: Cardiovascular Imaging for the Practitioner Oct. 24, 25
iMAGINE: Cardiovascular Imaging for the Practitioner will take place Friday (10/24) and Saturday (10/25) at the Biomedical Research Tower. The conference will highlight selected hot-button issues in cardiovascular imaging and clinical decision-making, emphasizing the interface between imaging data and clinical management of selected cardiovascular diseases, and provide the practitioner with a practical guide. Institutional Review Board applications revised
The application forms used for IRB review and exemption of human subjects research have been updated. Changes include addition of an appendix for review of international research and streamlining of the Maternal Fetal Welfare Committee review process. A separate section for external investigators and key personnel has also been included, as well as general reformatting and editorial clarifications throughout. Free flu shots offered on campus
Faculty and staff can receive a free flu shot at several campus locations through Wednesday (12/10), courtesy of the Faculty and Staff Wellness Program. Choose a date and location (click on Flu Shot Sign-Up). Your employee ID number (on your Buck ID, Hospital ID or pay stub), is necessary to register. Your employee ID number and photo identification is required at your appointment. The campus flu campaign will include two dates, Friday (10/31) and Thursday (11/6), for adult dependents (18 years of age and older) of employees who are enrolled in a university medical plan. Dependents must present their health insurance card and a photo ID.

Third annual Vets for Pets 5K Nov. 2
The third annual Vets for Pets 5K walk/run (with or without your dog) is scheduled for Sunday (11/2). Organized by the Veterinary Medicine students in the classes of 2010 and 2011, proceeds will benefit the Franklin County Dog Shelter, as well as provide support to the classes. Register by Wednesday (10/22) and receive a $5 discount and a free T-shirt. Registration is $25 after Thursday (10/23). Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; walk starts at 10.
