Herbers to lead national board advocating for women in science
The nation’s largest association dedicated to advancing women in science has elected Joan Herbers, OSU professor of evolution, ecology and organismal biology, as its next executive board leader. She will serve one year as president-elect of the Association for Women in Science executive board in January 2009 before assuming the presidency in 2010 and 2011. She will follow with a one-year term as immediate past president. The executive board sets the strategic direction and provides leadership to the national organization. Herbers has served on the AWIS board as a councilor since 2007, chairing the board’s chapters committee. AWIS, based in Washington, D.C., has more than 3,000 members and 50 chapters nationwide. Today: Homecoming parade, pep rally scheduled
Homecoming 2008 events continue today (10/24) with the Homecoming Parade at 6 p.m., starting at the Ohio Stadium and ending at the South Oval for a Tailgate and Pep Rally at 7:30 p.m. (view parade route). The forecast is calling for a chance of rain. If the rain is a light drizzle, the parade will go on, however, in the event of a downpour the parade will be cancelled (and will not be rescheduled). Take a Lap (around the Oval) with Gee and Lewellen Nov. 14
Join President Gordon Gee and Associate Vice President for Human Resources Larry Lewellen at noon Friday (11/14) for “Take a Lap with Gee and Lewellen.” In conjunction with Hit the Road with the Buckeyes, Gee and Lewellen will kick off a lap around the Oval on the steps in front of Bricker Hall. Festivities will include Brutus Buckeye, OSU Cheerleaders, the Buckeye Brass Band and a prize raffle. Be sure to wear your scarlet and gray to show your support for the Buckeyes. Read more >
Engineering, Medicine, John Glenn present Prescription for an Aging Population
On the 10th anniversary of Sen. John Glenn’s historic return to space, Ohio State is presenting “Engineering and Medicine: The Prescription for an Aging Population,” from 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday (11/5) in 115 Biomedical Research Tower. Glenn and specialists from the colleges of Engineering and Medicine will discuss the effects of aging on the human body, and what Ohio State is doing to further the research interests Glenn began on the Shuttle Discovery in 1998. Wanzo to discuss cartoons of Sam Milai at Cartoon Research Library
Rebecca Wanzo, assistant professor of Women's Studies and African American and African Studies, will discuss the cartoons of Sam Milai at 4:30 p.m. Monday (10/27) in the seminar room adjacent to the Cartoon Research Library (021L Wexner). An exhibition of Milai's cartoons from the 1960s is on display through Wednesday (12/31) in the Cartoon Research Library's reading room. Physics Colloquium to focus on Islam and Science
Pervez Hoodbhoy, chair of the Physics Department at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, will deliver "Islam and Science - The Quest for Rapprochement" at 4 p.m. Tuesday (10/28) in 1080 Physics Research Building. The speaker is the author of Islam and Science: Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality, now available in seven languages. Chavez to discuss medical career path in Oct. 29 Mo Mullet Lecture
The Medical Student Alumni Council and Medical Center Alumni Affairs will host the Fall “Mo Mullet” Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/29) in the Ross Heart Hospital Auditorium. Annette Chavez (Class of 1985) will discuss her career path from hospital physician to private practitioner. Chavez established and runs her own private practice and will share the challenges and rewards of that endeavor. Emeriti faculty eligible for free flu shot
Emeriti faculty may receive a free flu shot at several campus locations through Wednesday (12/10), courtesy of the Faculty and Staff Wellness Program. All OSU faculty and staff may participate. Select a date and location (use flu shot link). Your employee ID number is necessary to register, and a photo ID is needed at your appointment. The campus flu campaign includes two dates, Friday (10/31) and Thursday (11/6), for adult dependents of employees and rehired retirees who are enrolled in a university medical plan. Dependents must present their health insurance card and a photo ID.

International Affairs has extended the deadline for its International Photography Competition to Wednesday (10/29). The photography competition is open to all current students, faculty, staff and visiting scholars at Ohio State. All entries must be original and must have been taken outside the United States.
