NetJets gift creates inaugural “Pelotonia” bike tour to benefit OSU cancer research
Made possible by NetJets’ gift to the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute, a new cycling event, Pelotonia is coming to central Ohio next fall. The event promises to attract serious riders and the community for a weekend of cycling, entertainment and volunteerism with 100 percent of donations to benefit cancer research at Ohio State. The goal of Pelotonia is to fund cancer research while creating an inspiring and emotional experience, and more than 2,000 cyclists and 1,000 volunteers are expected to participate. As part of its March announcement to expand its Columbus based operations, NetJets made a $12.5 million gift to establish the community based cycling event. Routes will include a single day 50 mile loop, a two day 190 mile tour, and a single day “century” ride with an overnight stay and ride back to Columbus. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. New President's Council on Sustainability at Ohio State announced
A new President's Council on Sustainability at Ohio State has been created to help coordinate the university's efforts on behalf of environmental sustainability. The council was announced by President Gordon Gee during his address to faculty last week. The council will serve as an overarching steering committee for campus issues surrounding sustainability. The charge is to: Develop a subcommittee structure with members of the President's Council on Sustainability chairing the appropriate subcommittees; leverage activities currently underway and capitalize on our brand equity to promote, under a common umbrella, the university's sustainability initiatives; and coordinate universitywide communications, including web site, to serve as a central repository of sustainability initiatives.
Members of the council are Douglas Alsdorf, associate professor, Math and Physical Sciences; Jack Casey, associate vice president for health services-University Hospitals; Laura Christobeck, mechanical engineering student; Kathryn Dillow, special assistant to the vice president, Business and Finance; Gregory Hosteler, Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences graduate research associate; Bern Kohler, professor, Math and Physical Sciences; Karen Patterson, senior director, internal communications; and Kate Wolford, director of operations, Office of the President.
Search committee for Veterinary Medicine dean moves forward
Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph A. Alutto has appointed the search committee for the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and an executive search firm has been interviewed and hired to expedite the process. The approved job description will be posted on the college web site and other selected locations. Nominations will continue to be accepted until a selection is made.

Scheuren to help make sense of election numbers, political polls

Rebekah Gee to discuss Women’s Health Policy Initiatives Oct. 30
Rebekah Gee, a physician and the Robert Wood Johnson Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, will discuss “Taking on Wal-Mart and Other Women’s Health Policy Initiatives” from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday (10/30) in the Smith Seminar Room in the Physics Research Building. In 2006, while still a student at Harvard Medical School, Gee and colleagues sued Wal-Mart after discovering that the company did not stock the Plan B emergency contraceptive at their pharmacies. WOSU TV’S Columbus on the Record tapes with live studio audience
WOSU TV’s Columbus on the Record will be taped before a live studio audience from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday (10/30) at WOSU@COSI. Host Mike Thompson and his panel will analyze the major races and ballot issues on the last Columbus on the Record before the November 4 election. They will dissect the presidential race in Ohio and look at central Ohio Congressional races, the Ohio Attorney General’s race, and the statewide ballot issues including casinos and pay day lending. An evening of Middle Eastern protest poetry Oct. 29
Faculty and students will recite and translate works of protest poetry from four languages offered in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/29) in 120 Mershon Center. College of Law seeking mock trial jurors
The Clinical Programs at the Moritz College of Law is seeking faculty, staff and friends to serve as jurors at mock trials to be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 13, 17, 20, and 24 in the Moot Court Room at the College of Law (corner of 12th and High Street). The judges in the cases will be sitting judges from around the state. Jurors will hear an entire case and then discuss it with law students and judges. Choose one trial or all four.
