OSU Heart Program names first Schottenstein Laureate
Ohio State's Heart and Vascular Center has named Pascal Goldschmidt, senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, the inaugural recipient of the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Prize in Cardiovascular Sciences. The Schottenstein Prize, established with a $2 million gift from philanthropists Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein, will be awarded biennially to an international leader in the clinical sciences of cardiovascular medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, or the basic sciences of molecular or cellular cardiology. With the gift, the Schottenstein Laureate receives an honorarium of at least $100,000. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Today: Film on women’s suffrage followed by panel discussion
“Iron Jawed Angels,” a film about two women who fought for passage of the 19th Amendment, will show at 6 p.m. today (10/28) in 0002 Psychology Building. A panel discussion about the history of women’s civic participation and its relevance today will follow. The film, based on a true story, draws its title from the nicknames given to Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, two 1920 activists who pushed the boundaries of protest. They were thrown in jail, went on a hunger strike and refused to be force-fed. The event is sponsored by The Women’s Place and US: Women of Color Think Tank. Contact: cunningham.212@osu.edu
Obama senior adviser to speak at Drinko Hall today
Dan Shapiro, a senior policy adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, will speak from 2-3 p.m. today (10/28) at the Moritz College of Law. Shapiro, who has also worked for the National Security Council and several members of Congress, will discuss “Middle East Policy Under an Obama Administration.” The student group Law School Democrats are sponsoring the talk. Ohio Resource Center garners top award for integrating math, science in schools
The Ohio Resource Center for Mathematics, Science and Reading will receive the School Science and Mathematics Association’s Award for Excellence in Integrating Science and Mathematics on Saturday (11/15) in Raleigh, N.C. ORC, headquartered in the College of Education and Human Ecology, Office of Outreach and Engagement, is directed by Peggy Kasten. The honor recognizes ORC’s efforts to foster, promote and extend the integration of mathematics and science at all levels by developing classroom materials and curricula for teacher professional development. Pervez Hoodbhoy, chair of the Physics Department, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, will deliver "Islam and Science - The Quest for Rapprochement" at 4 p.m. today (10/28) in 1080 Physics Research Building. The speaker is the author of "Islam and Science: Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality." A reception is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. A real-time stream of the event is available online. Through a competitive bidding process, Travel Solutions has been chosen as Ohio State’s new travel agency beginning Saturday (11/1). Ohio State Mansfield presents The Male Animal Nov. 6-9
Ohio State Mansfield will present The Male Animal, a comedy by James Thurber and Elliot Nugent, at 7 p.m. Thursday (11/6), 8 p.m. Friday (11/7) and Saturday (11/8) and 2:30 p.m. Sunday (11/9) in Founders Auditorium. The plot: It's the week of the Michigan game, and all thoughts are football. Can English Professor Tommy Turner avoid losing his wife to an old football star and keep freedom of speech on campus? On vampires and ghosts: Arts and Humanities talk and tour Oct. 30
Daniel Collins, associate professor of Slavic studies, will give a hair-raising talk on “Shadowing the Vampire: East European Folklore of the Undead at 7 p.m. Thursday (10/30) in 014 University Hall. The event is open to the public and suitable for children sixth grade and higher. At 8 p.m., the Arts and Humanities Dean’s Student Advisory Group will lead groups on a ghost tour around the Oval. The Rare Books and MSS Library of Ohio State will celebrate the acquisition of the papers from Poets Against War founder Sam Hamill with a pair of readings at OSU Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Oct. 30 info session for TELR Expertise Grants
Attend an information session for TELR Expertise Grants at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (10/30)
in the Learning Collaboration Studio (060 Science and Engineering Library). The session will include a presentation about the grant program and past projects followed by audience questions. Faculty applicants can request up to 100 hours of TELR expertise on a project related to teaching and learning with technology, as well as up to $10,000 in funding. Final proposals are due Nov. 15.
