OARDC: Renewable energy workshop to focus on alternatives

Ohio State is hosting a Renewable Energy Workshop from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wednesday (11/12) at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster. Wind power, solar power, pellet stoves, biodiesel, anaerobic digestion, geothermal heat pumps, energy conservation, and corn and cellulosic ethanol will be among the topics. Speakers include Ohio State scientists and Ohio renewable energy experts. Program details and registration are available online, or contact wicks.14@osu.edu.

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Today: Burne to deliver Dentistry's distinguished lectures

Distinguished lecturer Robert A. Burne, professor and chair of Oral Biology at the University of Florida, will present “Biofilms and Caries: Sisyphus Meets Streptococcus Mutans” at 11:30 a.m. today (10/30) in 1183 Postle Hall. Burnes’ second lecture, “Complexities in Catabolite Modification of Gene Expression in Streptococcus Mutans,” will be presented at 2 p.m. in 518 James Cancer Hospital. OSU police to conduct training in Brown Hall today

OSU police are using Brown Hall for training purposes from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. today (10/30). Service vehicles will be parked behind Brown Hall. OSUPD has also asked to use Lord Hall on Monday (11/24) for training. The vacant building where the scenarios are played out provides an invaluable training tool for the police department to practice in an actual university building. Contact: Lt. Chipman to discuss Taiwanese cultural activism Oct. 31

The Institute for Chinese Studies “Future of the Past” Lecture Series continues at 2:30 p.m. Friday (10/31) in 136 Jennings Hall when Elana Chipman, postdoctoral researcher at OSU, delivers “Sincerity, Authenticity and the Discourse of ‘Tradition’ in Taiwanese Cultural Activism.” The presentation will examine the way tradition is deployed as a form of value in Taiwanese culture activism. The Environmental Impact of a Nuclear Renaissance Oct 31

Rich Denning, professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Science will discuss "The Environmental Impact of a Nuclear Renaissance" at 3:30 p.m. Friday (10/31) in 1080 Physics Research Building. The lecture is presented by OSU’s Institute for Energy and the Environment in support of the Environmental Science Graduate Program. Filmmaker to introduce acclaimed Secrecy Nov. 1

The new film Secrecy, screening at 7 p.m. Saturday (11/1) at the Wexner Center, explores issues surrounding our government's obsession with secrecy and classified documents as a way to combat terrorism. Directors Robb Moss and Peter Galison are on the Harvard faculty; Moss will introduce and discuss the film. The Los Angeles Times writes, "Smart and unexpected, Secrecy combines thoughtful interviews with an elegant visual look to produce an incisive examination of some of the key issues of our time." HR workshop explores Affirmative Action for Veterans, Military Leave

A workshop, "Affirmative Action for Veterans and Military Leave/Reemployment Rights" will be held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday (11/13) at 1590 N. High St., Suite 430, South Campus Gateway. Participants will learn about discrimination, legal requirements and affirmative action for protected veterans in all employment practices. The workshop will also provide a detailed explanation of the Military Leave/Reemployment Rights policy. Register online.

Barcott part of the Colloquium on Globalization and Ethics

The Honors Collegium in conjunction with the Global Health Initiative is hosting Rye Barcott, president and founder of Carolina for Kibera, for a campus event from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday (11/7). A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Barcott served in the Marine Corps before founding the NGO and was named "Hero of Global Health" by Time magazine. Tuttle Park Place roadwork to impact campus traffic

Work on the milling and paving of Tuttle Park Place will begin at approximately 9 a.m. Friday (10/31). The work is scheduled for five days, weather permitting. The contractor will maintain two-way traffic during all phases of work. Paving of the road will occur on Saturday (11/1). Striping and traffic detector loop installations will be completed by Tuesday (11/4). The project is being funded and directed by Facilities Operations and Development. Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion & Disability papers due

Session proposals are due Saturday (11/1) for the Ninth Annual Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion & Disability: Change, Challenge, & Collaboration, to be held Tuesday (4/28/09) and Wednesday (4/29/09) on the Columbus campus. Student posters are due Monday (3/30/09). The conference continues the university's efforts to bring together a diverse audience to explore disability as both an individual experience and social reality that cuts across typical divisions of education and employment; scholarship and service; business and government; race, gender and ethnicity. OSU Mansfield: Moses to discuss civil rights Nov. 3

Ohio State Mansfield's 2008 Distinguished Diversity Speaker Robert Moses, author of "Radical Equations," will speak in Mansfield at two different locations on Monday (11/3). He will deliver "Civil Rights History," at 3 p.m. in the Eisenhower Student Union, and "Civil Rights and The Algebra Project" at 7:30 p.m. at Mansfield Senior High School. Both are free and open to the public. Moses is among the most important organizers of the voting rights effort in Mississippi in the 1960s.
