Researchers find potential heart disease, sleep apnea link

OSU researchers have discovered a possible link between a common sleep disorder and heart disease, which is the leading cause of death responsible for 29 percent of people worldwide. Sleep medicine and cardiovascular experts at the OSU Medical Center wanted to see what would happen to fat cell secretion of certain substances when sleep apnea was simulated. While most of the substances secreted by fat cells have undesirable effects, others, such as a substance called adiponectin, may have the opposite action and even prevent atherosclerosis, the hardening of the arteries. Dean Shipp recognized by American Public Health Association

College of Optometry Dean Melvin Shipp received the 2008 Executive Director’s Citation at the 136th American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in San Diego, Calif. on Tuesday (10/28). Shipp served as treasurer of the APHA from 2001-07 and as an Executive Board member from 1999-2007. He served as the founding chair of the Education Board and chair of the Finance and Audit Committee from 2001-07, and has served as a section councilor and governing councilor for the Vision Care. Texts and Contexts conference today and Nov. 1

The Center for Epigraphical and Palaeographical Studies is hosting a Texts and Contexts conference today (10/31)-Saturday (11/1) in 090 Science and Engineering Library. The conference seeks to investigate the textual traditions of various texts and genres, including texts in classical Latin, mediaeval Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Middle English, and the vernaculars. Nov. 1: Buckeye Book Fair at OARDC

Billed as Ohio's largest literary event, the 21st annual Buckeye Book Fair takes place from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (11/1) in Fisher Auditorium at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster. Admission is free. Eighty-two Ohio-based writers, illustrators and photographers will be there to sign and sell their books. Included from Ohio State will be signed copies of Jim Tressel's The Winners Manual (Tressel will not be there) and Kurt Knebusch, editor with OARDC and OSU Extension, and author of three science and nature books for kids. Renker to present inaugural lecture Nov. 3

Elizabeth Renker, OSU professor of English, will deliver “The End of the Curriculum” at 4:30 p.m. Monday (11/3) at the Faculty Club. Renker will discuss what she describes as the “post-curricular university,” a major turning point in the history of higher education in the United States. The lecture is part of the Arts and Humanities Inaugural Lecture Series honoring faculty who have obtained the rank of full professor. The event is free and open to the public. Mansfield art gallery hosts The Jaffe/Vergano Connection exhibition

Ohio State Mansfield's Pearl Conard Art Gallery will host the exhibition The Jaffe/Vergano Connection Monday (11/3)-Friday (11/28). The exhibition features the works of Amanda Jaffe of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Cristina Vergano of New York City. An opening reception will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday (11/3). Nov 4: "New" Literacies raise new questions

The profusion of proclaimed literacies, from civic and financial literacy to political and visual literacy, raises questions about the relationships new literacies have to literacies rooted in language, and reading and writing. Panelists Sandy Cornett (Allied Medicine; Health Literacy), Susan Fisher (Biology; Scientific Literacy), and Kay Bea Jones (Architecture; Spatial Literacy) will discuss the issues from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday (11/4) at the George Wells Knight House, 104 E. 15th Ave. They will also introduce the graduate courses they developed to help meet the growing needs and challenges. “Living in America May Be Bad for Your Health” seminar on Nov. 6

M. David Low, University of Texas School of Public Health professor emeritus, will present “Living in America May be Bad for Your Health: Toxic Waste From U.S. Health Care Policy?” from 12:30-1:18 p.m. Thursday (11/6) in M-008 Starling-Loving Hall.
