OSU professors to be inducted into American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Ann Hamilton, professor in the Department of Art and Tina Henkin, professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology and Robert W. and Estelle S. Bingham Professor of Biological Sciences, are among those to be inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Saturday (10/10) at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, Mass. The program celebrates pioneering research and scholarship, artistic achievement, and exemplary service to society. Federal grant to link OSU, Columbus schools and community partners to improve teaching
Ohio State has received a $12.9 million federal grant that will fund a new program to prepare teachers to be successful in high-need areas for the Columbus City Schools. Ohio State’s College of Education and Human Ecology will graduate 600 bachelor-degree teachers, focusing on those specializing in math, science and foreign languages, and will also create a Teaching Residents program that will place 120 graduate-level teachers with the Columbus City Schools, and match them with experienced mentors who teach in the district.
The grant will also allow the college to work collaboratively with the university’s College of Arts and Sciences, the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Department of Education, Battelle for Kids and Nationwide Insurance on various programs to enhance the quality of teachers in Columbus and beyond. The Undergraduate Research Day and Student Poster Forum will take place from 12:30-4 p.m. today (10/9) in the Physics Research Building. View more than 60 student posters highlighting summer research accomplishments; attend two faculty panels and an information session on conducting international research. Reception and closing remarks with President Gee will take place between 3 and 4 p.m. All are welcome.
Ohio State celebrates National Work and Family Month in October
In celebration of National Work and Family Month in October, Ohio State and Human Resources are bringing faculty and staff a variety of workshops designed to improve and integrate work and life. Events celebrate anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species
Ohio State is hosting a series of events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species. Francisco Ayala, eminent scientist and president of the Society for the Study of Evolution, will participate in two upcoming events:
- Darwin: The Growth of an Idea, Ayala will present Evolution and Intelligent Design: Darwin’s Gift to Science and Religion, at 7 p.m. Tuesday (10/13) at 250 Knowlton Hall. Reception at 6:30 p.m.

Libraries course enhancement grants 2010 call for proposals
University Libraries is accepting proposals for the 2010 Course Enhancement Grant program. Grants of $2,000 will be given to instructors for the enhancement of courses by substantially integrating library resources and/or incorporating information literacy instruction. OSU Newark: 70-Mile Pilgrimage begins Oct. 10
A core group of 25-30 people will begin their 70-mile walk at 10 a.m. Saturday (10/10) at Chillicothe’s Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, following a presentation by Bradley Lepper of the Ohio Historical Society. The walkers will reach Geller Park in Heath at 3:30 p.m. Friday (10/16). All are welcome to see the walkers off and then to meet them to walk the final mile into the Octagon Earthworks. Visit the OSU Urban Arts Space for the Art21 Preview Party from 3:30-6 p.m. Saturday (10/10), and see Transformation before it airs on PBS. Transformation is the third episode in Season 5 of the Peabody Award-winning television series, Art21-Art in the Twenty-First Century. The OSU Center for Folklore Studies and the School of Music are hosting a lecture by NPR host Nick Spitzer, “Roots to Routes: Conservation and Creolization in American Vernacular Music,” at 4:30 p.m. Monday (10/12) in the Wexner Center’s Film Theater. Spitzer, the producer and host of American Routes, is a folklorist and a professor of American studies and communication at Tulane University. This event is the third and final presentation in the series Race and Memory in American Vernacular Music. This event is supported by funding from the Ohio Humanities Council.
