Inaugural symposium sets cosmological agenda for the next decade; Public lecture tonight
World experts on the nature of the universe are on campus today (10/12)-Wednesday (10/14) for the inaugural symposium of the Center for Cosmology and Astro-Particle Physics. Attendees will set the research priorities to enable fundamental breakthroughs in the next 10 years. A special public lecture by University of Wisconsin-Madison physicist Francis Halzen, at 7:30 p.m. today (10/12) in E0001 Scott Laboratory, will reveal how researchers are using ice at the bottom of the world to capture some of the most energetic particles in the universe. President Gee's Oct. 7 address to faculty available online
President Gee delivered his fall address to faculty on Wednesday (10/7) in the newly renovated Thompson Library. TYPE 2 DIABETES STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled on glipizide, Glimeperide, glyburide, or other sulfonylurea medication. Participants will receive study related care, study medication, lab tests, glucose monitoring supplies, and nutrition and exercise counseling at no charge. OSU Police Division recognized for response to recent shooting situation
The OSU Police Division was recognized by Central Ohio Crime Stoppers for the response by OSU Police Officers to an extremely violent shooting situation in the university district on Monday (9/7). The Crime Stoppers board presented a plaque, which credits the bravery of officers for coming to the aid of citizens and fellow police officers. The Police Division awarded its highest individual honor, the Valor Award, to Lieutenant Denny Hollern for his role and leadership in this incident. Eight officers received Commendation Awards. Academic Affairs reminds tenure-track faculty coming up for fourth-year review that they are now required to use the new online tool, OSU:pro, to create their dossiers. OAA is partnering with University Libraries and the OSU:pro team to provide data entry assistance to faculty who are preparing for these reviews. Today: NPR host Nick Spitzer to lecture
The OSU Center for Folklore Studies and the School of Music are hosting a lecture by NPR host Nick Spitzer, “Roots to Routes: Conservation and Creolization in American Vernacular Music,” at 4:30 p.m. today (10/12) in the Wexner Center’s Film Theater. Spitzer, the producer and host of American Routes, is a folklorist and a professor of American studies and communication at Tulane University. This event is the third and final presentation in the series Race and Memory in American Vernacular Music. This event is supported by funding from the Ohio Humanities Council. Oct. 13: Program on classics in historically Black colleges
University Libraries Evening Series presents Kenneth Goings, professor in the Department of African American and African Studies and the Department of History, and Eugene O’ Connor, managing editor of OSU Press, at 7 p.m. Tuesday (10/13) in 165 Thompson Library. The lecture, "They Dared to Call Their Souls Their Own: The Classics as a Tool of Resistance and Social Uplift," examines the little-known history of the teaching of Greek and Latin at black colleges in the United States from the 1850s to the present. Interested in recording audio and on-screen content during class lectures or from your office? Join the Digital Union for a workshop on lecture capture from 2-3:30 p.m. Monday (10/19) at 060 Science and Engineering Library. The session will cover recording with Camtasia software, microphone recommendations to improve audio quality, and steps to submit your recordings for online sharing.
