Centers for Innovation and Innovation Group proposals selected for funding

Academic Affairs and the Office of Research are announcing the establishment of two Centers for Innovation and three Innovation Groups. The Centers for Innovation and Innovation Groups initiative was created by the university to encourage trans-institutional and interdisciplinary scholarship. The Centers proposals selected for funding are the OSU International Poverty Solutions Collaborative and the Food Innovation Center: Foods for Global Security, Safety, and Health Promotion. The Groups proposals to receive funding are Complexity in Human, Natural, and Engineered Systems; the OSU Center for Ethics and Human Values; and Computational Modeling of Global Infectious Disease Threats and Policy. Thompson Library receives Columbus Landmarks Design Award

Columbus Landmarks Foundation presented its 2009 James B. Recchie Design Award to Ohio State's Thompson Library Renovation and Expansion, during a ceremony held Friday (10/9). The annual award recognizes quality urban design in central Ohio. The library project, designed by Acock Associates Architects, Gund Partnership and MSI Design, was selected over four other finalists. Jurists selected the project for the impact it will have on thousands of people every year, and applauded the skillful blending of the old and new, preserving the historic character while creating a dynamic 21st century library. RESEARCH STUDY. Interested in DENTAL IMPLANTS? The OSU Division of Periodontology is conducting several studies on dental implant therapy and is seeking volunteers for participation. The various studies have different purposes, eligibility criteria, and time commitment (duration). OSU Medical Center: Visitor restrictions, effective immediately

Due to the high number of flu cases in Central Ohio, the OSU Medical Center is taking steps to protect patients, families and staff by temporarily limiting visitors to its hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices. The policy impacts patients and visitors with flu-like symptoms and children, and is effective immediately. TYPE 2 DIABETES STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled on glipizide, Glimeperide, glyburide, or other sulfonylurea medication. Participants will receive study related care, study medication, lab tests, glucose monitoring supplies, and nutrition and exercise counseling at no charge. Clay Marsh, senior associate vice president for Health Sciences Research at OSU, is a featured researcher on the National Institutes of Health National Heart Lung and Blood Institute web site. Marsh discusses how coordinating efforts between doctors, researchers and educators — and accelerating the time it takes to apply a laboratory discovery at the patient's bedside — can turn a fatal disease into a chronic disease. Bouw to deliver next KSA Territory series lecture Oct. 14

Amsterdam-based architect Matthijs Bouw will present the next KSA Territory series lecture at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (10/14) in the Knowlton Hall Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. William Julius Wilson, the Lewis P. and Linda L. Oct. 16: ECE Distinguished Seminar Series with MIT’s Robert Gallager

Robert G. Gallager, M.I.T professor emeritus, will deliver “The Interplay of Theory and Technology in the Communication Sciences” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday (10/16) in Dreese Laboratory’s Marlin Thurston Auditorium. Gallager is the recipient of the IEEE Medal of Honor (1990), and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and U.S. National Academy of Sciences. The seminar is part of the ECE Distinguished Seminar series and is jointly sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Sensing Systems.
