Global food concerns focus of New Center for Innovation at Ohio State

Ohio State is investing $3.75 million over the next five years in a new food center that will address global issues in food supply, food policy, and nutrition and health. The Food Innovation Center: Foods for Global Security, Safety, and Health Promotion will focus efforts around four themes: designing foods for health, ensuring food safety, advancing biomedical nutrition in disease prevention and health promotion, and examining global food strategy and policy, and involves more than 80 faculty from 12 colleges. Depressed pregnant women could be at higher risk for severe response to flu infection

Pregnant women with significant symptoms of depression tend to have a stronger biological reaction to the seasonal flu vaccine than do women with lower depression levels, according to a new study. The finding provides an argument in favor of flu vaccination during pregnancy, because it suggests that the immune systems in depressed pregnant women are not functioning typically. This immune dysregulation could affect symptom severity among women who become infected with influenza. Lisa Christian, OSU assistant professor of psychiatry, is lead author of the research. Grabmeier recognized for outstanding service by National Association of Science Writers

Jeff Grabmeier, director of Research Communications at OSU, was selected to receive the annual Diane McGurgan Award for outstanding service to the field of science writing, at the annual meetings of both the National Association of Science Writers and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, held last week. Grabmeier has served as co-chair of the NASW education and mentorship programs, among other services. He was selected for his exemplary leadership in preparing tomorrow's class of science journalists, as well as for his contributions as a regular columnist in the organization's quarterly magazine. Participation in the Veterans Learning Community grows

The Veterans Learning Community will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday (11/2) at the Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities, 104 E. 15th Ave. Newcomers are encouraged to attend. The group includes undergraduates eager to connect and collaborate on veterans issues and academic opportunities related to their military experience. Jerry Buccafusco will present “Novel Therapeutics for Cognitive Impairment” at 11 a.m. Tuesday (11/3) in 103 L. M. Parks Hall. Buccafusco is Regent’s Professor and director of the Alzheimer’s Research Center, Medical College of Georgia. British trickery during world wars subject of talk

Longtime BBC producer Nicholas Rankin will discuss his latest book, A Genius for Deception: How Cunning Helped the British Win Two World Wars at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (11/4) at the Mershon Center. In the book, Rankin shows how camouflage, propaganda, secret intelligence, and special forces were used during World War I, and how deception continued in World War II with strategies such as the creation of dummy airfields, rumors of an army that would supposedly invade Greece, and a massive misdirection critical to the success of the D-Day invasion in 1944. The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center is presenting "The Uneven Implementation of the Death Penalty in Ohio Geography, Politics, and the Race of Murder Victims," by Andrew Welsh-Huggins, at 6 p.m. Wednesday (11/4) at the Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. Welsh-Huggins, a reporter for The Associated Press in Columbus, will give a presentation based upon his book, No Winners Here Tonight: Race, Politics, and Geography in One of the Country’s Busiest Death Penalty States. Dentistry students offer free exams and x-rays Nov. 4

College of Dentistry students will offer free dental exams and free dental x-rays from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday (11/4) in 1038A Postle Hall. Must be at least 18 years of age and in good health. Each participant will receive one free dental exam, two free dental x-rays, and an evaluation for additional free treatments. The event is open to the public.
