Celebrating the 75th anniversary of Script Ohio

 This month marks the 75th anniversary of a treasured Ohio State tradition — Script Ohio. First performed in Ohio Stadium in October of 1936, Script Ohio is the signature formation of the OSU Marching Band. At the same time, the university is also saluting marching band director Jon Woods, who is retiring at the end of the 2011-12 academic year.

Non-smoking, moderately obese people (body mass index between 30 and 44), with family history of obesity, aged 21-40, needed for study on body processes that affect weight control; must give 2 small blood and urine samples, do a 20-30 minute breath test that measures internal calorie use rates, and take vegetable oil capsules for 6 weeks; compensation of up to $300.

Kirwan Institute receives HUD grant for work on equitable development

A collaboration including the Kirwan Institute Opportunity Communities program and two other partner organizations was recently awarded a $900,000 grant to serve as one of the primary technical assistance providers for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on equitable development for the national sustainable communities program. Kirwan will train regional planners on social equity issues and will also assist with regional planning, opportunity mapping and civic engagement in a number of regions working on regional sustainability plans.

Pregnant or not pregnant? Have you not received the flu shot this year? Researchers at OSUMC are conducting a study of effects of life stress on the immune system in pregnancy. Women will complete 5 study visits over one month. Each will receive a flu shot, answer questions about life stress, health, and health behaviors and, at each study visit, have a small amount of blood drawn. Participants will be paid up to $150. Student information releases

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, is a federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records, including financial records. Without the appropriate student information releases, student account, and academic records cannot be discussed with a parent, guardian, spouse, or other parties. Students can now complete information releases for academic, account and financial aid information online by selecting Student Information Release in the Personal Information section of the Student Center, available via http://buckeyelink.osu.edu.

Students wishing to withhold the release of their Directory Information can select that option under the Withhold Directory Information tab. For more information, see the Student Information Release FAQ at http://scc.osu.edu.

OSU Medical Center launches IHIS Oct. 15

On Saturday (10/15), the OSU Medical Center is launching Integrated Health care Information System, which is a single, integrated electronic medical record for patients. IHIS will offer patients and staff improved safety, efficiency and convenience. This major undertaking has involved the training of approximately 14,000 Ohio State physicians and staff throughout the Columbus area.

Construction/traffic alert

Alley, east of Neil Avenue, to close for two months

The southern portion of the alley, east of Neil Avenue, between 11th and 10th avenues, will be closed from Monday (10/17)-Saturday (12/17) for utility work and repaving. Vehicles and pedestrians may enter the northern portion of the alley to access adjacent parking lots and buildings (including the Younkin Center), but through-traffic will not be possible.

School of Music to present free concert Oct. 15

The School of Music is presenting a free concert on Saturday (10/15) at 8 p.m. in Weigel Auditorium in association with Parent and Family Weekend. The concert will highlight vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles from the school including the Art Blakey Jazz Combo, the Firebird Flute Trio, and The Men's Glee Club Statesmen singing traditional OSU songs.

Exempt forms help session Oct. 19

The Office of Responsible Research Practices offers monthly workshops consisting of forms help sessions and seminars on various educational topics. A session on exempt research will take place from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday (10/19) in 117 Research Administration Building. ORRP staff will provide an overview of the application and will explain the types of human subjects research that are exempt from IRB review.
