Headline newsSCHMIDELER RECOGNIZED AT WHITE HOUSE FOR RESEARCH Jim Schmideler, OSU professor of Mechanical Engineering, was honored at the
White House recently as a winner of a 2006 Presidential Early Career Award
for Scientists and Engineers. He is participating in the National Science Foundation's
Faculty Early Career Development Program. Schmiedeler is developing a mathematical
model of motor coordination and, based on that model, he will collaborate with
the university's division of physical therapy and department of physical medicine
and rehabilitation to develop a robot to aid patients' physical rehabilitation. Read

Civil Dialogue” will take place from 7:30-9 p.m. today (11/14), live

of the National Human Genome Research Institute; Jeffrey McKee, OSU Department

Faculty must often overcome operational challenges related to the use of educational technologies and software applications and evaluate the impact on instructional goals and student satisfaction. The presentation will discuss a scholarly approach to a technology project and describe the pilot as a case example. Register online. COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DISTINGUISHED LECTURE NOV. 15The Department of Computer Science and Engineering will present a Distinguished
Guest Lecture with Gary Miller, professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon
at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (11/15) in 480 Dreese Labs. Miller will deliver “Meshing
in Fixed Dimension in Near Optimal Work and Time.” He is known for his
algorithm design, both sequential and parallel, which has appeared in more
than 100 journal and conference papers. In 2003, he was a co-recipient of the
Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award. Read

(12/5). PROVE IT: RACIAL BIAS IN THE COURTROOM NOV. 15Deborah J. Merritt, John Deaver Drinko/Baker & Hostetler Chair in Law
at the Moritz College of Law will present “Prove It: Racial Bias in the
Courtroom” at 6 p.m. Thursday (11/15) at the Department of African American
and African Studies Community Extension Center, 905 Mount Vernon Ave. Merritt
will discuss the unreliability of eyewitness testimony and confessions used
as evidence in court. The lecture is free and open to the public, and will

of the Living Culture Initiative and the Beanfield exhibit by Michael Mercil,
Department of Art. Rick Livingston, Institute for Collaborative Research and
Public Humanities, and his students will present a “Field of Beans” anthology
of poetry and prose. Mercil will read a short prose selection by Verlyn Klinkenborg
that previews a proposed project for “living culture” that promises
