Headline newsLINGUISTICS PROFESSOR TO GIVE AUTUMN COMMENCEMENT ADDRESSBrian D. Joseph, Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics and the
Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics at Ohio State, has
been selected to speak at autumn quarter commencement, which begins at 1 p.m.
Sunday (12/9) at St. John Arena. Joseph is one of the world's leading specialists
in historical linguistics - the study of how languages change and develop through
time. He was named a Distinguished University Professor in 2003, a fellow of
the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004, and a fellow of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science in 2006. Read

REGISTER NOW FOR KIRWAN INSTITUTE’S NATIONAL CONFERENCEThe Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity has extended the
registration deadline to Monday (11/26) for its upcoming national conference,
“Toward
a Transformative Agenda Around Race,” expected to bring more than 600
people to the Columbus Hyatt Regency Friday (11/30)-Sunday (12/2). Four plenary
sessions will include notable scholars from Columbia, Emory and Arizona; john
a. powell, executive director of the Kirwan Institute; actors Danny Glover

online NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDNominations should be submitted by Friday (12/14) for the university’s Distinguished Service Award that recognizes individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the university. Nominees may include those who have served in academic or administrative positions at the university, as well as alumni and other non-university individuals. Recipients are recognized at each Commencement ceremony. Nomination information and a list of past recipients are available online. Current Events in Historical Perspective,” published jointly by the department’s
Public History Initiative and its online historical resource site, eHistory.
In light of many Americans’ dissatisfaction with the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, the current issue features the essay “Conflict termination
and the end to insurgencies,” by OSU history professor Joe Guilmartin,
who flew helicopters in two tours during Vietnam, including during the evacuation

Assistance is needed from noon-3 p.m. Thursday (11/22) in the Tom W. Davis Special Events Gym, at the RPAC. to view “An Evening with Russell Simmons” at 8 p.m. Tuesday (11/20)
in Mershon Auditorium. Simmons, a famed hip-hop mogul, major philanthropist
and co-founder of Def Jam records, will share his unique insights on culture,
business, and life in the industry. He also will discuss his new book on achieving

hosting the event. Contact: robinson.776@osu.edu VETERINARY TEACHING HOSPITAL OFFERS EXPANDED SERVICESThe Small Animal Community Practice program, located in the Veterinary Teaching
Hospital at Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, has recently
expanded its hours to better serve the needs of the community. Weekday, evening
and weekend appointments are available and clients can bring their pets to
the clinic in the morning and pick them up at the end of the workday. Under
the direct supervision of faculty veterinarians Jane Flores and Julie Mahaney,
the students perform preventative health care examinations and provide treatment
