Headline newsHANZLIK NAMED RHODES SCHOLARJessica Hanzlik, a senior majoring in physics and French, has been named a
2008 Rhodes Scholar. The Rhodes Scholarship, which funds two years of graduate
study at the University of Oxford, is awarded to 32 U.S. students each year
who demonstrate superior academic ability, leadership, and the potential to
make an effective and positive contribution throughout the world. Hanzlik is
Ohio State’s fifth Rhodes Scholar and the university’s first female
Scholar. She has conducted high-energy physics research with OSU Mathematical
and Physical Sciences professors Richard Hughes and Brian Winer. Read

PUBLIC SAFETY RECOGNIZED FOR FOOTBALL GAME DAY MANAGEMENTThe work of the OSU Department of Public Safety, Police Division in management
of OSU football game day activities is cited as an example of a best practice
in a newly released publication by U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community
Oriented Policing. The report, “Planning and Managing Security for Major
Special Events: Guidelines for Law Enforcement” (NCJ 220565, 128 pp.)
was initiated by Congress and is intended as a resource for law enforcement.
The guide covers pre-event planning, security needs during the event and post-event
activities and offers examples of effective approaches used during events of

Historically, recipients have provided a broad spectrum of services to the
university in a variety of official and unofficial capacities, both on campus
and off. Nominations are due Friday (12/14). Winners will be approved by the
Board of Trustees and notified in March and will receive their awards at commencement
ceremonies for spring, summer and autumn ’08, and spring ’09. Send
