NOV. 30 CEREMONY TO MARK NEW STUDENT UNION CONSTRUCTION

In lieu of a traditional groundbreaking ceremony, Student Affairs will host a “building raising” for the new student union building on Friday (11/30). Demolition of the old union is complete and the event will mark the beginning of construction on the new facility, scheduled for completion in 2010. Following a 2:30 p.m. program in Saxbe Auditorium at Drinko Hall, guests will cross the street to the building site for a special ceremony. A reception will follow at 4 p.m. in Pomerene Hall. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunchtime. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. COLLEGE DATA INFORM STRATEGIC PLANNING EFFORT

Ohio State's 18 colleges are now developing multi-year strategic plans. The plans are informed by data such as expenditures, compensation, credit hours of instruction, student majors, degrees awarded, and other college-specific trend data. The information also assists deans in revising patterns of administration, defining resource distribution principles and policies, and planning the use of resources. REGISTER FOR UNIVERSITY EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION PLAN

Ohio State has a number of ways to communicate with faculty, staff, students and parents in the event of an urgent situation, including WOSU AM, OSU Today, the OSU Web site, and local media outlets. New this year is a text message alert system for the public to stay informed of potential emergencies. Faculty, staff, students and parents are encouraged to register their cell phone numbers with the Department of Public Safety. To learn more and to register, go to www.buckeyealert.osu.edu

MEDICAL CENTER HOSTS COMMUNITY DIABETES EVENT DEC. 1

In conjunction with a two-day Global Diabetes Conference, the OSU Medical Center will host a community event from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday (12/1) at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St. that will feature panel discussions, workshops, screenings, cooking demonstrations and exhibitions with diabetes-care professionals on hand to answer questions. Admission is $15. Jeffrey Levine from the television show “The Biggest Loser” is the keynote speaker. The event will include comments by Mayor Michael Coleman and State Sen. Ray Miller. UNIVERSITY DISTRICT ABOUNDS IN HOLIDAY ACTIVITY

With a convergence of holiday events and shopping, the University District invites the public to High Street the weekend of Thursday (11/29)-Sunday (12/2). Among the activities are the Wexner Center's Columbus International Children's Film Festival, the College of the Arts' annual Celebration Concert, holiday music at South Campus Gateway, holiday card-making at Au Moda, and free shuttles to the Short North Holiday Hop. FINAL READALOUD HAS HOLIDAY THEME

The final ReadAloud program of the quarter will take place from 3-4 p.m. Thursday (11/29) in the Wexner Café. Chris Andersen, Office of Research, will share two holiday stories from James Thurber: “A Visit from Saint Nicholas in the Ernest Hemingway Manner” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Jason Gray, University Press, will join him on the program with selections from his recent chapbook, “How to Paint the Savior Dead.” Contact: distel.1@osu.edu

WOSU PUBLIC MEDIA’S IMIX AIRDATES CHANGED

The Big Ten Network has made changes to the original programming schedule due to recent programs added by other universities. The next three airdates for “iMix,” Ohio State’s first non-sports program to air on the network, are Thursday (11/29) at 4 p.m., Tuesday (12/4) at 4 a.m., and Wednesday (12/5) at 10 a.m. The Buckeye Bullet, Stone Lab and ThePalestra.com, an Internet news service geared toward university students are featured in a fast-paced television magazine format.
