OSU Extension ID system for animal-drawn vehicles becomes standard
After a decade of advocacy and education, OSU Extension recommendations for lighting and marking animal-drawn equipment have been standardized, paving the way for national and international adoption of safety procedures on vehicles, such as Amish buggies, horse-drawn farm wagons and urban carriages. The standard, officially adopted by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, outlines the practices and procedures for establishing a unique identification system for slow-moving, animal-drawn vehicles on public roadways or highways. According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, over 1,400 crashes between animal-drawn buggies and motor vehicles have occurred since 1998. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Today: Asher, Beck among presenters for Worldwide Megaconference
OSU professors Herb Asher and Paul Beck will present "Reflections on the USA Presidential Election" at approximately 9:05 a.m. today (11/6) during the largest worldwide video conference, Internet2 Commons’ Megaconference, starting at 8 a.m. today. More than 180 registered participants across the globe will share their real-world uses of H.323 videoconferencing and other compatible systems. Today: Urban Arts Space exhibit features faculty art work
The OSU Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St. is celebrating two current exhibitions, the OSU Department of Art Faculty Exhibition and Alan Crockett: Mark Making, with a public reception from 5-8 p.m. today (11/6). For the first time since 1990, the work of the entire art faculty is in one space. Tracking Water from Space - ESGP Seminar Nov. 7
Doug Alsdorf, professor of Environmental Sciences and director of OSU's Climate, Water, and Carbon Program, and interim director of the Institute for Energy and the Environment will present, "Tracking Earth's Surface Water From Space" at 3:30 p.m. Friday (11/7) at the Ohio Supercomputer Center, Bale Theatre. Salute to the African American Veterans of the Korean War Nov. 8
As part of its annual Black Veterans Day Salute, the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will present “A Salute to African Americans of the Korean War” from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday (11/8) at the Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. Bruce Tyler, University of Louisville associate professor of History will present “Black Soldiers and the Korean War: Fighting on Two Fronts.” Tyler has written extensively on urban and African American wartime home front activities. iMix airs on the Big Ten Network
A new episode of iMix will air at 4 p.m. today (11/6); 4 a.m. Monday (11/10); and 10 a.m. Wednesday (11/12). iMix is one of many programs WOSU Public Media produces for Ohio State to air on the Big Ten Network. Featured are: the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Warhol exhibition; Steve Martino and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design; the virtual world of Second Life with women's studies professor Sharon Collingwood; and Jeff Smith’s Bone at the Wexner Center for the Arts. SMART SEED program orientation sessions Nov. 7 and 19
The Digital Union, with its corporate partner, SMART Technologies is offering a second SEED program to OSU faculty. Info sessions are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday (11/7) and 3 p.m. Friday (11/19) at the Digital Union (SEL 370). Ten faculty are able to work with SMART Boards, Sympodiums, and Airliners in the classroom for the length of Spring Quarter 2009. If the department wishes to purchase the equipment at the end of the quarter, it is offered a reduced price; if not, there is no cost. Register online.
OSU tree sale to support nursery research and education
A tree sale will be held from 1-6 p.m. today (11/6) and Friday (11/7) and 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Saturday (11/8) at the OSU Waterman Farm at the OSU Container Teaching and Research Nursery, 2490 Carmack Road. From the Kenny Road entrance take a left at the white building that is across from the Master Gardener vegetable trials. Proceeds support nursery research and education at Ohio State. Checks only. Affirmative Action for Veterans and Military Leave/Reemployment Rights
Workshop participants will learn about discrimination, legal requirements and affirmative action for protected veterans in all employment practices. The workshop will also provide a detailed explanation of the Military Leave/Reemployment Rights policy. The session takes place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday (11/13) at Suite 430 Gateway Building, 1590 N. High St.. Register online.
Free flu shots offered on campus
Faculty and staff can receive a free flu shot at several campus locations through Wednesday (12/10), courtesy of the Faculty and Staff Wellness Program. Choose a date and location (click Flu Shot Sign-Up). Your employee ID number is necessary to register and your employee ID number and photo identification are required at your appointment. Adult dependents of employees who are enrolled in a university medical plan may receive a shot on Thursday (11/6). Dependents must present their health insurance card and a photo ID.
CABS Veterans Day holiday service announced
In observance of the Veterans Day Holiday, CABS will run reduced service on Tuesday (11/11). Please note that during the holiday "WA," "WB," "WC," "CX," and "CXC" permits are valid in "C" spaces on Central Campus. For more information, visit the Transportation & Parking Services web site.
