Rolling Stone calls Ayelet Rose Gottlieb an "Israeli jazz seductress." In Monday’s performance of Mayim Rabim, based on erotic love poetry drawn from the scriptural texts of the "Song of Solomon", she is joined by several musicians and three other vocalists for a multimedia show. Hollingsworth to deliver autumn commencement address

Richard Hollingsworth, OSU vice president for student life, is the speaker for Ohio State’s autumn commencement, set for Sunday (12/14) in the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Approximately 2,000 students will receive degrees during the ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m. Hollingsworth, who is retiring after 35 years at Ohio State, has devoted his entire career to Ohio State and improving the lives of its students. Throughout his career, Hollingsworth has been committed to diversity and inclusiveness, and has been a leader in numerous university initiatives to recruit, retain and support underrepresented students. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Ohio State recognized for excellence in outreach

Ohio State is one of five universities recognized last weekend at the annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges for their excellence in outreach and engagement. Each of the five were regional winners of the 2008 Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award and finalists for the national award. Ohio State was noted for its comprehensive and collaborative approach to urban revitalization in the University District. Penn State received the top national award, but in the two years of the award competition Ohio State has each time been the north central regional award recipient. Ohio State researcher receives $5.5 million NIH grant

E. Antonio Chiocca, chair of neurosurgery at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, has received a $5.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a more potent oncolytic virus as a treatment for brain cancer. Chiocca and his team of researchers at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center will be working on the development of a biologic agent as a new treatment for brain cancer that may one day be used in human clinical trials. OSU Jazz Ensembles to perform this weekend

The Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Ted McDaniel will perform at 8 p.m. today (11/14) in Weigel Auditorium, and the Jazz Lab Ensemble under the direction of Kris Keith will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday (11/16) in Hughes Auditorium. Both performances are free to School of Music faculty and students. Tickets are available at the door for $6.

O’Leary Lecture: Child Poverty and Anti-Poverty in the U.S.

The College of Social Work hosts its annual Robert J. O'Leary Memorial Lecture at 6 p.m. Monday (11/17) at the Thurber Theatre, Drake Performance and Event Center. Sandra Danziger, director of the Michigan Program on Poverty and Social Welfare Policy at the Ford School of Public Policy and University of Michigan professor of social work, will discuss Child Poverty and Anti-Poverty in the U.S. A reception will follow. Sen. Bill Bradley to discuss global challenges Nov. 20

The Center for U.S. Global Engagement and its Ohio Partners - the ONE Campaign, the John Glenn School of Public Affairs, and the Columbus Council on World Affairs - are hosting Sen. Bill Bradley (D-NJ), a presidential candidate in 2000 at 8:30 a.m. Thursday (11/20) at the Faculty Club. Bradley will discuss the global challenges facing President-elect Obama and how best to tackle these issues of national security. Continental breakfast served. The event is free. Institutional research seed grants available

The OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center is offering American Cancer Society-supported seed grants of up to $30,000 for the period of Thursday (1/1/09)-Tuesday (12/1/09). The application deadline is Sunday (11/30). The award provides seed money to independent junior faculty and their equivalent, research scientists, for the initiation of cancer research projects so they can obtain preliminary results to compete successfully for national research grants. Cayuse424 introduction session Nov. 18

A Cayuse424 introduction session will take place from 9:30-11 a.m. Tuesday (11/18) in 117 Research Foundation, 1960 Kenny Road. The Cayuse SF424 system is a Web-based product that facilitates electronic preparation and submission of proposals to the NIH, NSF and USDA. Registration is required and is available online.

Faculty panel to discuss undergraduate research Nov. 20

Faculty and staff are asked to encourage undergraduate students interested in SBS and Humanities research to attend Recipe for Success: Basic Ingredients for Undergraduate Research at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (11/20) in 130 Page Hall. Buckberg to discuss revolutionary heart theory

Gerald Buckberg, renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and OSU alumnus, will discuss the Helical Heart, a revolutionary theory he helped develop on the formation and function of the heart, at 1 p.m. Friday (11/21) in 160 Meiling Hall.
