Feeling stressed over the economy? OSU has resources that can help

As the economy has continued to show signs of being in a recession, the University Faculty and Staff Assistance Program has seen more and more employees turn there for help in managing their stress and anxiety. UFSAP and other entities on campus, such as the Office of Human Resources and OSU Extension, are reaching out to help employees weather the current financial storm with assistance programs, access to community resources and counseling expertise. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Must have access to Internet. A volunteer fee will be paid. If you are interested please e-mail Kemba Days Yancey at gcrc.research@osumc.edu.


Nominations sought for Distinguished Service Awards

Nominations are due Monday (12/15) for the 2009 Distinguished Service Awards, established in 1952 to recognize individuals who have served Ohio State in truly outstanding fashion. Honorees will be approved by the Board of Trustees and notified in early spring. Awards will be presented at commencement ceremonies for spring, summer and autumn ’09, and winter ’10. New e-Payroll authentication process

As an additional security measure, TALX (Ohio State’s e-Payroll web site vendor) is revalidating the identity of employees who log into the university’s e-Payroll web site through an enhanced authentication process. This may require employees to answer a few questions about themselves and change their PIN. The questions are based on information from publicly available data sources. Today: Sporting event, concert to impact parking

Several events occurring on campus today (11/20), including the OSU men's basketball game at St. John Arena and the Reba McEntire/Kelly Clarkson concert at the Jerome Schottenstein Center may impact traffic and parking on campus during the evening hours. These events, along with others in the vicinity could make parking difficult and may impact your commute through campus. For details, visit the Transportation & Parking Services web site.

Great American Smokeout today; OSUMC can help you quit

November marks Lung Cancer Awareness month and today (11/20) is the Great American Smokeout, a day set aside to help smokers quit smoking. The OSU Medical Center’s Tobacco Treatment Center, located on the fifth floor of Cramblett Hall, is offering a one-hour information session and tour at noon today (11/20). Certified tobacco treatment specialists will discuss many topics, including benefit subsidized Ohio State health plan options for tobacco cessation and pharmacotherapy. University events celebrate Aviation History Month

To celebrate Aviation History Month, the OSU Airport and the Aviation Department will display a Cirrus aircraft this week on the plaza near Hitchcock Hall. Stop by today (11/20) or Friday (11/21) to see the plane and learn more about Ohio State's Aviation program. In addition, airport staff will conduct behind-the-scenes tours of the OSU Airport, 2160 West Case Road at noon Tuesday (11/25) and 2 p.m. Wednesday (11/26). Advance registration required for tours. Cabaret Urbain at the OSU Urban Arts Space Nov. 21

The School of Music Opera and Musical Theater Program will present an evening of famous arias, opera scenes, musical theater, and cabaret in a galleria setting, from 7-10 p.m. Friday (11/21) at the OSU Urban Arts Space. Students and pianists will perform excerpts from operas including Bizet's Carmen, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Mozart's Don Giovanni, Rossini's Barber of Seville, and Donizetti's Don Pasquale. Musical theater and cabaret will include selections from Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, The Merry Widow, Little Shop of Horrors, and Les Miserables. Admission is $25 (includes hors d'oevres). Register by Dec. 12 for Commencement academic processional

Faculty planning to march in the academic processional at Autumn Commencement on Sunday (12/14) in the Jerome Schottenstein Center should notify their college dean's office by Friday (12/5). On commencement day, faculty registered to participate in the processional should assemble by 1:45 p.m. in cap and gown in the west concourse at Section 114 on entry level. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. For details, call the Office of Commencement and Special Events, 292-9051.

Today: Tour, tastings and tailgate at 4-H Center

The university community is invited to tours and a caterer- sponsored tailgate tastings from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. today (11/20) at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive. The 4-H Center has meeting spaces that can accommodate up to 400 guests and is available for meetings, receptions, conferences or a dinner party under the stars.
