Ahalt appointed chair of national Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation

Stan Ahalt, executive director of the Ohio Supercomputer Center and OSU professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been appointed chair of the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation for 2009. An advocacy group for accelerating scientific discovery through computing technology, CASC represents 60 of the nation’s top research universities and computing centers. Ahalt will serve as an expert resource on high performance computing for the U.S. Congress, federal agencies, and state and local government bodies throughout the nation. OSC provides Ohio industries and universities, including Ohio State, with a reliable high performance computing and networking infrastructure. Read more >

NRC research associateships announced

The National Research Council of the National Academies has announced its postdoctoral and senior research associateship programs for 2009. Full-time associateships are awarded for research in the fields of chemistry, earth, atmospheric and space sciences, engineering, applied sciences, and physics. Many of the laboratories are open to both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals and to both recent doctoral recipients and senior investigators. Postdoctoral stipends range from $42,000 to $72,000. UFSAP offers online video to assist with stress, financial pressures

The University Faculty and Staff Assistance Program now offers two online videos to help Ohio State faculty and staff manage the stress and financial pressures that many are experiencing in these difficult economic times. It’s A Wonderful Life leadership workshop Dec. 10

The OSU Leadership Center is hosting “It’s a Wonderful Life - Leading Through Service” from 9:15-11:45 a.m. Wednesday (12/10) at 2120 Fyffe Road. The workshop focuses on the innate positive behavior in the hero George Bailey, from the holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life, to exemplify the fundamentals of service leadership. Continuing Education customized courses for nontraditional audiences

Faculty and academic units interested in offering customized courses to nontraditional audiences are invited to schedule an informational meeting with Continuing Education to explore the process and ask questions. Customized courses provide a cost recovery opportunity for academic departments and can begin as early as spring quarter 2009. Environmental Fellowship-Udall Foundation

The Udall Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2009 Environmental Public Policy and Conflict Resolution Dissertation Fellowship. Two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 are available for doctoral candidates researching U.S. environmental public policy and/or U.S. environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. ASFW hosts holiday happy hour

The Association of Staff and Faculty Women will host a holiday happy hour from 5-7 p.m. Thursday (12/4) at The Blackwell, Ballroom B.
