Ohio among top 10 states in study abroad and international students

Ohio is among the top 10 in the nation for the number of undergraduate students studying abroad and the number of international students studying at its colleges and universities, according to the Open Doors report published annually by the Institute of International Education. Ohio had 19,373 foreign students in 2007-08 (up 4 percent from 2006-07), and estimated their expenditures in the state at $429.5 million. In addition, the University System of Ohio is working to encourage international students to stay in Ohio once they have their degrees. Read the Open Doors report

Irwin recognized by North American Regional Science Council

Elena Irwin, OSU associate professor in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics, was presented the Geoffrey J.D. Hewings Award on Saturday (11/22) at the annual North American Conference of the Regional Science Association International. The award is presented by the North American Regional Science Council (http://www.narsc.org/), an international scholarly organization, and recognizes distinguished contributions to regional science research. Irwin was recognized for her outstanding work in land-use modeling, ecological-economic modeling and applied spatial econometrics.

University recognizes Thanksgiving holiday Nov. 27, 28

Ohio State is recognizing the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday (11/27) and Friday (11/28). There will be no classes and university offices will be closed.

There will be no CABS service from Thursday (11/27)-Saturday (11/29). CABS service will resume on Sunday (11/30), with the Weekend Courtesy Shuttle, Library/Buckeye Village, and Handivan service. Please note that during the holiday (11/27-11/30), WA, WB, WC, CX, and CXC permits are valid in "C" spaces on Central Campus. Read more >

Pace yourself to avoid holiday gluttony

There are many ways to enjoy the holidays without packing on the pounds. Eating slowly can help reduce overall intake over time, said Emily Lisciandro, a clinical dietician at the OSU Medical Center. A few minor changes can help you enjoy your favorite foods, such as checking cookbooks for lighter versions of your favorite recipes, and using fat-free or lighter versions of whipped toppings, cream cheese and other foods. Lisciandro also suggests focusing on other fun holiday activities - besides eating. Read more >

2009-2010 Freshman Seminar call for proposals

The Freshman Seminar program has instituted a new rolling deadline for Freshman Seminar proposals. Tenure-track faculty are invited to propose a one or two credit Freshman Seminar for the upcoming academic year (2009-10). Proposals are now due on a quarterly basis the year before the seminar will be taught. Seminars to be taught autumn quarter are due Monday (12/1); winter quarter due Sunday (3/1/09); spring seminars due Monday (6/1/09). Contact: Mercerhill.1@osu.edu or 292-6248. Read more >

KSA Banvard Gallery features “Re-Figurations” through Dec. 19

The Knowlton School of Architecture Banvard Gallery is currently featuring “Re-Figurations” through Friday (12/19). Re-Figurations is comprised of two bodies of work, one by Stephen Turk, OSU associate professor at KSA, and one by Michael Williams, assistant professor in the School of Architecture at Louisiana Tech University, which take as a point of departure the paintings of Francis Bacon. Located on the first floor of Knowlton Hall, Banvard Gallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. Read more >

Wexner offers free film in conjunction with World AIDS Day

Monday (12/1) is World AIDS Day and the Wexner Center is offering a free screening of a new documentary film, Isaac Julien's Derek, at 7 p.m. The film is about British artist Derek Jarman, who worked from the 1970s until his AIDS-related death in 1994 as an impassioned director of gay-themed cinema, discovering Scottish actress Tilda Swinton along the way and working with such music groups as The Smiths. Learning Collaboration Studio provides technology-rich classroom

The Learning Collaboration Studio (SEL 060) provides a flexible, technology-rich classroom environment including projection, 30 laptops, three walls of whiteboards and reconfigurable seating. Reminder: Institutional research seed grants due Nov. 30

The OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center is offering American Cancer Society-sponsored seed grants of up to $30,000 for 2009. The application deadline is Sunday (11/30). The award provides seed money to independent junior faculty and their equivalent, research scientists, for the initiation of cancer research projects to obtain preliminary results to compete successfully for national research grants.
