Snows of Kilimanjaro shrinking rapidly, and likely to be lost

 The remaining ice fields atop famed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania could be gone within two decades and perhaps even sooner, based on the latest survey of the ice fields remaining on the mountain, conducted by paleoclimatologist Lonnie Thompson, OSU professor of earth sciences, and his colleagues. Their predictions, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (http://www.pnas.org/), are among the latest dramatic physical evidence of global climate change. Introducing new grants for teaching and learning with technology

Learning Technology in the Office of the CIO announces two grants for advancing teaching and learning with technology. The Impact Grant offers support for large or key departmental courses; applications due Friday (12/4). The Professional Development Grant promotes personal or departmental professional development opportunities; applications due Friday (2/5/2010).  OSU Theatre opens its season with a new play and a Tennessee Williams’ classic. Benefits Open Enrollment tip – online enrollment

Open Enrollment Online, http://hr.osu.edu/oe/ is accessible 24 hours-a-day through Friday (11/6). Review existing medical, dental and vision coverage, elect a flexible spending account – current participants must re-enroll – and cancel short-term disability coverage. Open Enrollment Online is accessible with a valid OSU Internet User ID (name.#) and the password established for that account. Refer to the login page for information about activating that account or re-setting its password, if needed. Faculty and staff who do not wish to enroll online may print all appropriate forms from Open Enrollment Online and submit to Human Resources by Friday (11/6).

Prior Health Sciences Library web site: Take a quick survey

Your feedback is requested to help in the redesign of the Prior Health Sciences Library web site. Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion, & Disability: Call for Papers

A call for papers and student poster presentations has been issued for the Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion, & Disability: Future History conference, to be held Tuesday (4/27)-Wednesday (4/28). Submissions are due Saturday (11/7). This year’s conference examines disability as an individual experience, a legal construct and a social reality. The Center for Latin American Studies presents Cheiro do Ralo (Drained) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (11/4) in 180 Hagerty Hall. Lourenç, the owner of a secondhand shop, finds pleasure in taking unfair advantage of his customers. This behavior amuses him, until he finds it necessary to relate to his customers using a currency that is strange to him – namely affection – from the very same characters he imagined were under his control. Nov. 4: AIA Columbus Honor Awards Keynote Lecture

Douglas Stockman will present the AIA Columbus Honor Awards Keynote Lecture at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (11/4) in the Knowlton Hall Auditorium (KN250). An experienced world traveler, Stockman joined colleagues from BNIM Architects to form El Dorado, Inc., in order to address the important and strong connection between designing and making architecture, and blurring the boundary between the two. Nov. 5: Windows 7 Day at Ohio State

The Office of Student Life and the Digital Union invite you to Microsoft Windows 7 Day on Thursday (11/5) in the Science and Engineering Library. The day includes a general info session at noon in room 070 that highlights new features and improvements, and a Q-and-A session in room 390 at 3:30 p.m. that focuses on changes in Windows 7 that affect system administrators. Nov. 6 Kirwan Institute lecture addresses HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea

Public health policy and social forces related to national HIV programs in Papua New Guinea are the focus of a lecture to be held at noon Friday (11/6) in 423 Mendenhall Laboratory. The featured speaker is Lawrence Hammar, research scientist at the Center for Interventions, Treatment, and Addictions Research at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University. Workshop helps those facing grief during holidays

Join University Faculty and Staff Assistance Program counselor Lisa Borelli for "Facing Grief During the Holidays” from 5-6 p.m. Monday (11/9) at OSU Health Plan (formerly Managed Health Care Systems), 700 Ackerman Road, Suite 580. The workshop is designed to help you identify symptoms of grief, stress and depression and teach coping skills and resources that can help. OSU Renewable Energy Workshop Nov. 12

Ohio State will host its second annual Renewable Energy Workshop on Thursday (11/12) at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster.
