Ohio State Nanotech Center receives $12.5 million in NSF funding
An Ohio State University-led research center has been awarded $12.5 million in continued funding from the National Science Foundation. NSF first established the Center for Affordable Nanoengineering of Polymeric Biomedical Devices in 2004. The center is unique in that it is the only one among NSF’s 19 Nanoscale Science and Engineering Centers that focuses solely on the development of polymer-based bio-nanotechnology. In its first five years, the center spawned more than a dozen patents, as well as five commercial spin-off companies. Read more:

Benefits Open Enrollment ends Nov. 6
Open Enrollment ends Friday (11/6). Faculty and staff are encouraged to review their medical plan choice and verify that each covered dependent meets the eligibility guidelines, add or drop enrollment in dental and vision plans, enroll in flexible spending accounts – current participants must re-enroll – and cancel short-term disability coverage. Veterans Day Holiday observed Nov. 11; CABS service announced
The university will be observing Veteran's Day on Wednesday (11/11). Offices will be closed. In observance of the holiday, CABS will run reduced service on Wednesday (11/11). Lee to present Joan Huber Population Lecture Nov. 6
The Initiative in Population Research Annual Joan Huber Population Lecture, featuring Ronald Lee, professor of economics and demography and director, UC Berkeley Center for the Demographic and Economics of Aging University California, will take place from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday (11/6) in 140 Pfahl Hall. Lee will deliver “Some Economic Consequences of the Demographic Transition and Population Aging: Insights from National Transfer Accounts.” Reception to follow. African American Servicewomen to be honored Nov. 7
African-American women who have served in the U.S. armed forces will be honored at the fourth annual Black Veterans Day Salute from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday (11/7) at the Ohio State Community Extension Center, 905 Mount Vernon Ave. Col. Dolores Helen Hampton, the first president of the National Association of Black Military Women and the first inspector general of the U.S. Army Reserve, is the keynote speaker. Issa Bolous, Palestinian musician to play free concert in Newark
Palestinian musician Issa Boulos will perform a free concert at 8 p.m. Saturday (11/7) in the Black Box Theatre in LeFevre Hall at Ohio State Newark. Counter Culture: The American Coffee Shop Waitress at Urban Arts Space
Waitressing is one of the most common jobs for a woman to have and like most women’s work, it is often dismissed, stigmatized, or simply ignored. Join author and photographer Candacy A. Volunteers needed to plant flowering bulbs on OSU campus
Chadwick Arboretum is calling for volunteers to help horticulturist Peter Lowe install nearly 80,000 spring flowering bulbs in 17 pocket gardens throughout the OSU campus this week. Volunteers are meeting under the trellis in the Lane Avenue Gardens each day at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for bulb installation sessions. Commemorating the collapse of the Berlin Wall Nov. 9
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the Ohio State Center for Slavic and East European Studies will create a 6 by 20 foot replica of the wall on Monday (11/9) on the Wexner Plaza between Page Hall and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Construction of the wall will begin at 7 a.m. and once completed, passers-by can paint graffiti on the west side of the wall. Read more: http://oia.osu.edu
Meeting Innovation Group on Complexity in Natural, Social, and Engineered Systems
The Innovation Group on Complexity in Natural, Social and Engineered Systems will hold its first organizational meeting from 3-5 p.m. Monday (11/9) in 260 Dreese Laboratories. The group invites all faculty and students with an interest in complex systems — whether they are ant hills, immune systems, markets, ecosystems, climate systems, or distributed robotics — to join a discussion of future plans on how to make the innovation group successful. Registration is due by Friday (11/6) for the Association of Staff and Faculty Women luncheon to be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday (11/10) at the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery hosts Nobel Committee member
The OSU Medical Center Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is hosting Göran Hansson, secretary, Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine and member, Board of the Nobel Foundation for the annual Klassen Research Day on Thursday (11/12) in the BRT Auditorium.
