Pelotonia raises more than $4.5 million for cancer research
The inaugural Pelotonia tour raised $4,511,868 that will go directly to life-saving cancer research at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. Organizers said a new route of 70 to 75 miles will be added for the 2010 tour, which will take place Friday (8/13)-Sunday (8/15). The new route will supplement one-day rides of 25, 50 and 100 miles and the two-day route of 180 miles. Registration will begin Tuesday (12/1). Read more: http://www.pelotonia.org/ride/

White receives national association's Distinguished Service Award
Arthur L. White, OSU professor of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education in the School of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education and Human Ecology, has received the School Science and Mathematics Association George G. Mallinson Distinguished Service Award. White has taught for 40 years at OSU and has assumed leadership positions at the local, state, national, and international science and mathematics communities. He served as co-director of the National Center for Science Teaching and Learning at OSU and as the executive secretary for the National Association for Research in Science Teaching. White has been elected to serve on the SSMA Board three times – two times as a director-at-large and as president from 2006-08.
Hendrick is new director of School of Environment and Natural Resources
As of Sunday (11/1), Ron Hendrick, former professor of forest ecology and associate dean for academic affairs in the University of Georgia's D.B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, is director of Ohio State's School of Environment and Natural Resources, pending approval by the university's Board of Trustees. Hendrick becomes the 11th director of the school. Hendrick has an ecology background and has leadership experience in matters related to academic affairs. Former SENR director and professor Jerry Bigham will resume his faculty role. Read more: http://senr.osu.edu/
Ohio State Lima wins $864,000 National Science Foundation grant
Ohio State Lima has received a $864,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to engage high school students and their teachers in critical thinking skills that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, or STEM, content areas. It’s About Discovery uses the new Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies science curriculum as a foundation for the project that includes students and teachers from Ohio and North Carolina. Work on SR 315 planned for Saturday (11/7)
The following work is planned for State Route 315 on Saturday (11/7). All work is weather dependent; it may be postponed or cancelled without prior notice. SR 315 north will be reduced to two lanes between Interstate 670 and Olentangy River Road from 6 a.m.-5 p.m. to make improvements to the temporary pavement in preparation for the upcoming ice and snow season. There will be no ramp closures or restrictions. The work is being done on Saturday because the volume of traffic is reduced and there is not a home football game. OSU Mother's Research Project seeking donations of furniture, appliances
The OSU Mother's Research Project is seeking donations of furniture and appliances for homeless mothers. The project seeks to identify how best to assist homeless mothers with young children in their care. Over the next year, the group plans to house 45 families and offer supportive services so that families maintain their housing. Donations of furniture, especially cribs, as well as appliances, are requested. Natasha Slesnick is the principal investigator. If you are able to donate items, contact 805-1281. The Institute for Chinese Studies is hosting a conference, “China in World Financial Crisis and Other Challenges: Perspectives of Humanities and Social Sciences” today (11/6) and Saturday (11/7). Daniel Chow, Joseph S. Platt-Porter Wright Morris & Arthur Professor of Law, will present the keynote lecture, “Anti-Counterfeiting Strategies of Multi-nationals in China" at 9 a.m. Saturday (11/7) in 100 Mendenhall. Nov. 7: Chadwick Arboretum featured on PBS GardenSMART
Ohio State's Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens will be featured in the nationally syndicated PBS show GardenSMART, airing in central Ohio on WOSU-TV at 3 p.m. Saturday (11/7). In addition to 710 cultivars of annuals in the Trial Gardens, and a horticultural therapy program, personnel study what grows best in central Ohio, what uses the least amount of water, what fertilizers work best, and best plant selections for the landscape. Eco bags workshop at the OSU Urban Arts Space
Bring your unwanted disposable plastic shopping bags and transform them into beautiful and sturdy handbags at the OSU Urban Arts Space from 5-6 p.m. Thursday (11/12). Accommodating both beginner and advanced participants, artisan Marcia Trakas will work with guests to crochet the bags into masterpieces, keeping them out of the landfill. Tau Beta Pi sponsors Beat Michigan 5K Nov. 15
Online registration is currently open for runners (casual or otherwise) looking to support a good cause and kick off Beat Michigan week. The 5K run course winds through the OSU campus past Ohio Stadium and Thompson Library. Prizes are awarded for top finishers in several age groups, and all proceeds from the race will benefit Neighborhood Services Inc., which operates a food bank on Fourth and 18th avenues.
