University’s export controls policy helps safeguard faculty — and faculty research

While the vast majority of research done at Ohio State is shielded from export controls under the fundamental research exclusion — basic and applied research, the results of which ordinarily are published and shared broadly within the scientific community — there are numerous examples of instances that could trigger export controls. With that in mind, planning for an overseas trip sometimes includes a call to the Office of Research Compliance, which is charged with overseeing the university’s export controls policy. ElectroScience Lab to break ground on new building Dec. 11

The ElectroScience Laboratory, a major center of excellence within the College of Engineering and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has partnered with SciTech to occupy space in an innovative, new facility that showcases the laboratory's unique talents, history and demonstrated ability to carry out cutting-edge research. Join Engineering Dean Gregory Washington, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Chair Robert Lee and ElectroScience Laboratory Director John Volakis for a groundbreaking celebration at 4 p.m. Friday (12/11). Ohio State's Net Impact chapter recognized by international organization

Ohio State’s Net Impact chapter received a “Chapter of the Year” award from the international organization, based in part on it being the only undergraduate-graduate Net Impact chapter and its speedy ascent to “gold” status within one year of formation. The student organization started at the Fisher College of Business, however students have been reaching out to the entire Ohio State community. Read more >

University closed for the holiday Nov. 26, 27; CABS service announced

Due to the Thanksgiving Day holiday, Ohio State offices are closed and there are no classes on Thursday (11/26) and Friday (11/26). In observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday, there will be no CABS service from Thursday (11/26)-Saturday (11/28). On Sunday (11/29), CABS service will resume with the Campus Loop South, Buckeye Village, and Handivan service. H1N1 presentations available through College of Public Health

Ohio State’s College of Public Health faculty, staff and students have been trained by the Columbus Public Health Department to give presentations on H1N1 to community groups. Presentations include information on flu prevention, groups most at risk, flu symptoms, vaccinations and comparisons to seasonal flu. The college’s Center for Public Health Practice is coordinating the speaker requests. A request form is available at http://cph.osu.edu/h1n1_regform.cfm.

The Blackwell offers faculty, staff holiday offer

The Blackwell is offering an OSU faculty/staff holiday rate for friends and family coming in to town of $99 plus tax, inclusive of valet parking and two breakfast buffet vouchers in Bistro 2110 (each additional person is $10). The Blackwell features newly renovated guest rooms, either one king bed or two queen beds, and several king bed suites; rates vary. Ohio State to host annual Thanksgiving dinner Nov. 26

One of the largest Thanksgiving Day dinners on a college campus will be hosted by Ohio State at 1 p.m. Thursday (11/26) at the RPAC in the Tom Davis Special Events Gym. The free annual event will be held for more than 1,400 guests — students, faculty and staff, along with their families — who are unable to travel to their own homes for the holiday. Volunteers from the university community will assist in serving the traditional turkey dinner. Tickets are required and available at the Hale Cultural Center. View a slide show of last year's dinner. O-H-I-O debuts on Big Ten Network Nov. 24

O-H-I-O will air on the Big Ten Network at 9 a.m. today (11/24). Produced by WOSU Public Media, the episode will feature Ohio State’s solar decathlon team as it travels to the National Mall in Washington, D.C.; engineering students' streamlined hydrogen fuel cell breaking the speed record for electric vehicles; and monitoring and reducing Ohio State’s carbon footprint through the Scarlet, Grey, and Green program. Nov. 30: Promise of Justice book forum to examine law and policy

The Todd A. Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male will host a book forum examining law and policy at 5 p.m. Monday (11/30) in 143 University Hall. Mac Stewart, vice provost for the Office of Minority Affairs and editor of The Promise of Justice: Essays on Brown v. Board of Education, will be joined in the discussion by Deborah Jones Merritt and john a. powell, professors of law in the Moritz College of Law. Autographed copies of the book will be available.
