USAC to sponsor Hidden Benefits Fair Dec. 10The University Staff Advisory Committee is sponsoring the 14th annual Hidden Benefits Fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday (12/10) in the French Field House. The Hidden Benefits Fair has grown each year with attendance exceeding 2,000 staff last year. Admission is free and discounted hot dogs and soda will be available. OSU Reading Clinic lifts spirits and mindsIt brings tears to her eyes when Janine Harris thinks of the progress her fourth-grade daughter, Chloe has made in her spelling and writing comprehension, thanks to the OSU Reading Clinic. An initiative in the School of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education and Human Ecology, the clinic has a twofold mission: To provide clinical experience for undergraduate and graduate students and to help improve the literacy rate in the Columbus community. Read more > Dec. 3: Kobo to present final CAS lecture of quarterOusman Kobo, OSU assistant professor of History, will deliver "Western Modernity and 20th Century West African Islamic Reform," at noon Wednesday (12/3) in 122 Oxley Hall. This is the final Center for African Studies brown bag lecture of the quarter. Kobo's presentation will deal with West African Muslims' attempt to recreate a new form of Islam that conformed to changes wrought by European colonialism and the aspirations during the postcolonial state. Read more > Mershon Center offers faculty, student grantsEach year, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies holds a competition for Ohio State faculty and graduate students to apply for grant funds to support research in international security. Grants may be used for a variety of research-related purposes. Applications must be for projects that relate to one or more of the Mershon Center’s three areas of focus: the use of force and diplomacy; the ideas, identities and decisional processes that affect security; and the institutions that manage violent conflict. The deadline is Friday (1/30/09). Read more > 2009-2010 Freshman Seminar call for proposalsThe Freshman Seminar program has instituted a new rolling deadline for Freshman Seminar proposals. Tenure-track faculty are invited to propose a one or two credit Freshman Seminar for the upcoming academic year (2009-10). Proposals are now due on a quarterly basis the year before the seminar will be taught.
