New OSU research projects shortage of general surgeons by 2010

A new Ohio State study suggests that the number of available general surgeons, who often perform life-saving operations on patients in emergency rooms, will not keep up with public demand. As the population continues to grow, there will be a shortage of 1,300 general surgeons in 2010 in the U.S., meaning people will have to wait longer for emergency treatment and for elective general surgery, according to study co-authors Thomas E. Williams, clinical associate professor of surgery and E. Christopher Ellison, professor and chair for the department of surgery. Read more >

Details on university-wide awards available online

Faculty and staff looking for important details, such as sponsor, deadline, and the application process, for any of the university’s major awards can now find them online at one convenient site (oncampus.osu.edu/article.php?id=2523). Information on eight major awards, including the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Distinguished Staff Award and the University Distinguished Lecture Series is available.

Proposals sought for OSU digital media conference

OSU faculty, staff and students are encouraged to showcase their innovative uses of technology and connect with others at OSU doing similar work at the Digital Media in a Social World Conference, to be held on campus Thursday (2/19/09)-Friday (2/20/09). Sponsored by the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing, the Harvey Goldberg Program for Excellence in Teaching, and the Digital Union. Proposals are due by Monday (12/15). LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Today: Mexican film series finale

The Center for Latin American Studies will feature “El Ángel Exterminador/The Exterminating” as the finale of its Mexican film series, at 7:30 p.m. today (12/3) in 180 Hagerty Hall. The movie finds a group of socially prominent guests at a dinner party who find themselves unable to leave the drawing room after the meal. Some unexplainable force prevents their escape and as time passes the social order begins to break down. The film is free and has English subtitles. Read more >

Student talent showcased in Musical Celebration Concert Dec. 5

The School of Music presents its annual showcase event, the Musical Celebration Concert, at 8 p.m. Friday (12/5) in Mershon Auditorium. The fast-paced program of popular, classical and some seasonal selections involves more than 300 student musicians and singers performing in 16 different ensembles, large and small. Ohio State's Area Health Education Center funding available

As a partner with the Ohio Department of Health, Ohio State's Area Health Education Center has funding available to support programs in Central Ohio that will take place as part of Women's Health Week, May 2009. Project proposals are sought that will meet the healthcare needs of young women in the community. Submit proposals by e-mail by Friday (1/9/09). CSO compact disc premieres on WOSU 89.7 FM

WOSU Public Media will broadcast the new Columbus Symphony Orchestra compact disc in its entirety on WOSU 89.7 FM at 10 a.m. Thursday (12/4). The first commercial compact disc the symphony has made since 2001, it features the CSO performing Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and Symphony No. 5. A repeat broadcast of the music will air that evening during WOSU 89.7 FM’s Symphony at 7 program.
Also, at 8:50 a.m. Thursday during Morning Edition, WOSU 89.7 FM host Boyce Lancaster will talk with CSO Board chair Martin Inglis and Columbus Symphony musician James Akins.

Faculty reminder: Register by Dec. 5 for commencement processional

Faculty members planning to march in the academic processional at Autumn Commencement on Sunday (12/14) in the Jerome Schottenstein Center should notify their college dean's office by Friday (12/5). On commencement day, faculty registered to participate in the processional should assemble by 1:45 p.m. in cap and gown in the west concourse at Section 114 on entry level. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. For details, call the Office of Commencement and Special Events, 292-9051.

Public Safety hosts blood drive Dec. 4

The Department of Public Safety is hosting a blood drive from 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday (12/4) in 1019 Blankenship Hall. If you have donated on or before Saturday (10/4) you may be eligible to donate. Schedule an appointment online (sponsor code is buckeyes). Walk-ins welcome.
