Headline newsFuture surgeons practice surgery with “virtual” teaching toolThe Virtual Temporal Bone simulator, a collaboration between physicians and researchers at Ohio State's Department of Otolaryngology, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Ohio Supercomputer Center, creates true-to-life ear surgery experiences by using real-time, interactive computer simulations. The project, which received the prestigious Dr. Frank H. Netter Award for Special Contributions to Medical Education from the Vesalius Trust for Visual Communication in Health Sciences this year, is one of 37 research projects showcased in OSC’s research report. Ohio State leads conference with 80 Fall Academic All-Big Ten selectionsOhio State ranks first in the Big Ten with 80 student-athletes named to the Big Ten Fall Academic All-Conference team. Ohio State had academic honorees in all seven eligible fall sports. To be eligible for an Academic All-Big Ten selection, a student-athlete must be a letter winner in at least their second academic year and carry a grade-point average of 3.0 or better. Senior Brian Robiskie was one of eight football student-athletes to capture ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors. Read more > Women Changing the World: A Digital Narrative Showcase todayThis event, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. today (12/8) in the Learning Collaboration Studio, 060 Science and Engineering Library will premiere student-made digital narratives that explore how women in the U.S. and beyond are transforming their lives and their societies. A brunch reception will begin the screening. The showcase is sponsored by Women's Studies Honors 510: American Women's Movements, Pressey Honors Course Enrichment Grant, the Digital Union, the History Department's Goldberg Center, and the Department of Women's Studies. Contact: wu.287@osu.edu or 292-9331 Proposals sought for Communicative Cities ConferenceWith support from the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs and Ohio State, organizers are planning the Communicative Cities: Integrating Technology and Place Conference, to be held Thursday (6/25)-Friday (6/26) in Columbus. Planners, designers, city officials, policy-makers, communications professionals and others are invited to submit proposals for presentations. Submit online a proposal for a paper, symposium or design by Tuesday (1/20/09). Awards will be presented for the best student paper and best student design or plan. Contact: terzano.1@osu.edu Study abroad applications moving to online system Jan. 2The Office of International Affairs is moving to an online study abroad application system beginning Friday (1/2/09). Students planning to study abroad in the summer of 2009 and beyond will be able to complete an online application through the university’s new PeopleSoft system, which will make the flow of information seamless and paperless. Students will be able to access the online application through buckeyelink.osu.edu. Read more > OSU Urban Arts Space launches Idea LabInspiring innovative education, the OSU Urban Arts Space is launching the Idea Lab, an incubator for creative projects and ideas. The Idea Lab will be awarding grants of up to $3,500 in project funding, made possible by a grant of $10,000 from the Efroymson Family Fund, a CICF Fund. Ohio State students from all disciplines may submit a concept or "seed" idea during the open application period, now through Monday (2/2/09). Once proposals are accepted, the students will work with the Idea Lab's creative staff of graduate and undergraduate students. Read more > Rec Sports offers winter programming for children and familiesThe Age Group and Camps staff is presenting Winter Break Camp, Camp Now and Then, and Snow Day Camp throughout the winter season. Children enjoy exercise, fun and games while on break, during school closings, and other specially scheduled dates. Read more > OSU Marion campus book drive supports African book famineThe Ohio State Marion Office of Student Activities is currently conducting a campus textbook drive to benefit Books For Africa. Used college-level books are being collected in collection bins located in the Alber Student Center, Technical Education Building and Morrill Hall. Books For Africa is the largest shipper of donated textbooks to the African continent and has delivered more than 15 million books to 28 African countries.
