Johnson named director of Office of Continuing Education

 Darrell Johnson, currently the dean of Extended University Programs at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. will become director of the Office of Continuing Education at Ohio State effective Monday (1/26/09). With more than 10 years of experience in university administration, student counseling and educational outreach, Johnson brings to the position a depth of knowledge about continuing education. At Western Michigan, he oversees the delivery of graduate and undergraduate degree programs, non-credit programs, online course delivery, professional development, and personal enrichment opportunities, and also oversees seven branch campuses. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. From Astrophysics to Biomedicine via Nanotechnolgy

A cover story in the radiation therapy magazine IMAGE reported on novel developments in the use of X-rays and nanoparticles for cancer diagnostics and therapy by an interdisciplinary group at Ohio State and other institutions. The article, "The X-Ray Reloaded: Rearming Radiography with Resonant Theranostics," may be viewed online. The collaboration at OSU is led by Anil Pradhan (OSU professor of Astronomy and Chemical Physics), and includes researchers from the College of Biological and Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and the OSU Medical Center. SBS Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Social and Behavioral Sciences announce the establishment of the SBS Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship Program to support promising scholars committed to diversity and prepare them to enter tenure track faculty positions. Fellows will be affiliated with one of the eight academic units of SBS: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Communication, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Speech and Hearing Science. 2009 Distinguished Staff Award nominations sought

Human Resources is accepting nominations for the Distinguished Staff Award. The awards will honor 12 staff members for their outstanding leadership and accomplishments in service to the university. 2009 Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Award nominations sought

The University Senate Diversity Committee, in partnership with Human Resources, is accepting nominations for the 2009 Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Award. This annual awards program will recognize up to five units or individuals that have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity at Ohio State. Nominations are due Wednesday (12/31). OSU Clinical Research Professionals meeting Dec. 18

The next OSU Clinical Research Professionals meeting will take place from noon-1 p.m. Thursday (12/18) in 234 Meiling Hall and will focus on the Center for Clinical and Translational Science. The CCTS will foster the development of new programs and enhance existing efforts in 10 key areas that range from graduate education, research training, career support, faculty mentoring, and pilot funding to support clinical and translational research activities. CCTS program staff will provide a brief introduction to the resources and programs available. The event is open to everyone. Contact: jennifer.lanter@osumc.edu

Deadline extended for CCTS pilot funding

The application deadline has been extended to Saturday (1/10/09) for OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science pilot funding of up to $30,000, intended to encourage new multidisciplinary research groups to address integrated solutions to complex clinical and translational problems. It is expected that through generation of preliminary data, this funding will facilitate researchers in acquiring extramural support for new and expanded biomedical research efforts. W-2 statements can be received online

Human Resources is reminding employees that they can register to receive an online, printable version of their W-2 Wage and Tax Statement that will be posted on a secure web site in late January. You will be notified when the W-2 is available. Register any time during the year, however, any consent made on or after Thursday (1/15/09) will be regarded as consent for the next year (2010). If you sign up for the online option you will not receive a copy of the W-2 statement in the mail. Employees who have previously registered do not need to register again. Details are available online.

Bulletin board digests keep you up to date

With the onCampus Bulletin Board’s “Digests” feature, you can find out right away when someone posts a house for sale, is in the market for that piece of exercise equipment you have stored in your basement or simply is looking for a ride to work.
