Headline newsOhio State again among top universities nationally with newly named AAAS FellowsOnly one other institution in the country surpassed Ohio State this year in the number of its research faculty named as new Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. For the second time in the last three years, Ohio State ranked second nationally in producing new Fellows, a highly regarded recognition for researchers whom are selected by their peers. Looking for extraterrestrial life in all the right placesScientists are expanding the search for extraterrestrial life - and they've set their sights on some very unearthly planets. Cold "Super-Earths" - giant, "snowball" planets that astronomers have spied on the outskirts of faraway solar systems - could potentially support some kind of life, they have found. Such planets are plentiful; experts estimate that one-third of all solar systems contain super-Earths, according to Scott Gaudi, assistant professor of astronomy at Ohio State. Read more >
OSU Medical Center launches regional heart care initiativeThe OSU Medical Center is launching a regional quality improvement initiative to expedite care for patients suffering from the most serious form of heart attack, or ST-segment myocardial infarction (STEMI). OSU’s regional STEMI team is distributing computer modems to numerous central Ohio EMS agencies, including the Columbus Division of Fire, to transmit electrocardiogram tracings directly from the field to any hospital in the central Ohio region that performs the specialized procedure to open a blocked artery. A workshop to familiarize investigators with the new system will take place from 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday (1/6/09) in 165 Davis Heart Lung Research Institute. Register online. Alumni launch Beat Hunger Bowl ChallengeIn conjunction with the Buckeyes’ appearance in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday (1/5/09), the OSU Alumni Association is sponsoring the Beat Hunger Bowl Challenge, a nationwide food drive. Alumni groups around the country are encouraged to adopt and support a food pantry in their area. The association itself is directing its efforts to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. The food drive will continue through Saturday (1/31/09).
