"Smart" surveillance system may tag suspicious or lost people

Engineers at Ohio State are developing a computerized surveillance system that, when completed, will attempt to recognize whether a person on the street is acting suspiciously or appears to be lost. Intelligent video cameras, large video screens, and geo-referencing software are among the technologies that will soon be available to law enforcement and security agencies. The project is being developed by James W. Davis, OSU associate professor of computer science and engineering, and doctoral student Karthik Sankaranarayanan. Read more >

OSU Public Safety well represented at police academy graduation ceremony

The OSU Department of Public Safety Police Division was well represented at the graduation of the 122nd Basic Peace Officer Training Class on Friday (12/19) at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy, located near the Ohio Expo Center. Chief Paul Denton was the graduation speaker and three new officers with the OSU Police Department were among the 36 graduates: Kevin L. Huff, Steven Laman and Cassandra L. Shaffer. Laman received a special award for achievement in physical training while Shaffer served on the honor guard for the ceremony. Read more >

Submissions sought for annual Facets of Diversity report

Ohio State's Collaborative Diversity Initiative is accepting submissions for the 2009 edition of Facets of Diversity, the university's annual diversity report. The theme is “Diversity and Access.” Submissions should be 500 words or less. The deadline is Monday (1/26/09), with a publication date of spring 2009. Latest IMIX episode airs on the Big Ten Network

A new episode of iMix will air on the Big Ten Network on Thursday (12/25) at 3 p.m., Monday (12/29) at 4 a.m., and Wednesday (12/31) at 10 a.m. This episode will explore the future of technology at the Digital Union; go microscopic with Art Epstein and the Nanotech West Laboratory; and visit Objects of Wonder from The Ohio State University at the Columbus Museum of Art. iMix (Interactive Mixed Media) is a fast-paced television magazine program produced by WOSU Public Media for Ohio State to air on the Big Ten Network and on WOSU TV. Apply by Dec. 30 to be an Alternative Spring Break advisor

Alternative Spring Break faculty and staff advisor applications are available online and are due Tuesday (12/30). Trips are scheduled for 20 different cities this year and will take place Saturday (3/21/09)-Saturday (3/28/09). Alternative Spring Break is a weeklong, substance-free program centered on community service and civic engagement, and held during the university’s spring break. Contact: Holmes.443@osu.edu

Stefanie’s Champions seeks nominations for caregivers

The 10th annual Stefanie’s Champions Awards is seeking nomination for caregivers who are helping improve the lives of cancer patients. Six will be honored during an annual awards luncheon Wednesday (4/15/09) at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Cancer survivors or parents/guardians of cancer survivors younger than 18, can nominate a champion by visiting www.spielmanfund.com. Nominations are due by Friday (1/16/09).
