Headline news"Smart" surveillance system may tag suspicious or lost peopleEngineers at Ohio State are developing a computerized surveillance system that, when completed, will attempt to recognize whether a person on the street is acting suspiciously or appears to be lost. Intelligent video cameras, large video screens, and geo-referencing software are among the technologies that will soon be available to law enforcement and security agencies. The project is being developed by James W. Davis, OSU associate professor of computer science and engineering, and doctoral student Karthik Sankaranarayanan. Read more > OSU Public Safety well represented at police academy graduation ceremonyThe OSU Department of Public Safety Police Division was well represented at the graduation of the 122nd Basic Peace Officer Training Class on Friday (12/19) at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy, located near the Ohio Expo Center. Chief Paul Denton was the graduation speaker and three new officers with the OSU Police Department were among the 36 graduates: Kevin L. Huff, Steven Laman and Cassandra L. Shaffer. Laman received a special award for achievement in physical training while Shaffer served on the honor guard for the ceremony. Read more > Submissions sought for annual Facets of Diversity reportOhio State's Collaborative Diversity Initiative is accepting submissions for the 2009 edition of Facets of Diversity, the university's annual diversity report. The theme is “Diversity and Access.” Submissions should be 500 words or less. The deadline is Monday (1/26/09), with a publication date of spring 2009.
